Job Summary

Practices Spiritual Care skills under the supervision of a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Supervisor. Provides direct Spiritual Care services to patients, families and staff for the various nursing clinical areas to which may be assigned. In addition, the Chaplain Resident is responsible for participation in education and for meeting the Standards set forth by the Association for Clinical Pastoral Education, Inc. The primary purpose of this program is to advance clinical visitation skills including crisis counseling, medical ethics, addictions, end of life support, and spiritual assessment and to engage in theological reflection on that ministry.

Essential Functions

  • Performs daily spiritual care visitation.
  • Ensures appropriate response and follow-up on all referrals from the clinical nursing areas to which assigned.
  • Provides Spiritual Care and support to patients, families, and teammates of all cultural and spiritual backgrounds, does not proselytize.
  • Supports faith group leaders visiting their members who are patients.
  • Facilitates Spiritual Care Groups in collaboration with Health Care Team.
  • Maintains spiritual care statistics of daily Spiritual Care activities and completes charting for spiritual care interactions.
  • Maintains responsible relationship with his/her endorsing denomination, and engages in those activities necessary to the maintenance of that endorsement.
  • Takes initiative to maintain active and regular supervisory meetings with CPE Supervisor, and regularly reports professional activities at same meetings.
  • Works in groups and team meetings where appropriate as part of team delivery of care on clinical nursing areas.
  • Remains in compliance with the Standards and guidelines set forth in the Clinical Pastoral Education Student Handbook.
  • Attends regular peer group meetings, educational presentations, etc as required by the CPE Faculty.
Physical Requirements
Service ability to be mobile (walking, standing, sitting, etc.) Talking and hearing essential to communicate with patients, families, and teammates. Must be able to read and speak English in simple, understandable terms. Must be able to be mobile and free of any physical limitation which would preclude fulfillment of spiritual care duties. Ability to engage in a good working relationship with all departments.

Education, Experience and Certifications

Master's of Divinity or equivalency based on the Common Qualification and Competencies for Professional Chaplains preferred. One previous unit of Clinical Pastoral Education by an accredited ACPE center preferred.
