The Section of Neonatology is currently seeking a Neonatal Advanced Practice Provider (APP), who will work collaboratively with a physician, as well as independently. The Evanston Hospital Infant Special Care Unit is a Level III NICU providing critical care to newborns across the northern Chicagoland region. With over 500 annual admissions we provide expertise across neonatal issues including: specialized small baby care, therapeutic hypothermia, and high risk neonatal developmental follow up. We have a dedicated and supportive multidisciplinary care model that includes team members from nursing, pharmacy, respiratory care, dietary, and social work.

The APP will utilize critical judgement in the performance of newborn resuscitation and intensive care management of neonates. The APP will function with autonomy within the neonatal interdisciplinary care team while practicing respectful and equitable patient care.

What you will need:

  • License:Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) or Physician Assistant Associate (PAA) Licensure in the State of IL required;FederalDEA and Illinois Controlled Substance License required
  • Education:Completion of Master's level program in specialty area.
  • Certification:BLS for Healthcare Provider and NRP certification.
  • Certification in specialty: NCC certification as Neonatal Nurse Practitioner. Certificate of completion from Neonatal PA fellowship.
  • Experience:5+ years of inpatient newborn (highly preferred)

Special Knowledge and Skills Required:

  • Newborn resuscitation and delivery room management
  • Newborn airway management including intubation
  • Understanding of multiple modes of ventilation and appropriate use
  • Specialized care in extremely premature infants
  • Central line placement (umbilical and PCVC)
  • Newborn chest tube placement
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Therapeutic hypothermia

Equipment Utilized within the Scope of the Position:

  • Stethoscope
  • Monitors
  • Small baby equipment
  • Flow inflating bag
  • Ventilators - (HFJV, HFOV, CMV, NIMV, iNO, etc.)
  • Sterile procedures

Responsibilities:

  • Providing appropriate medical care to newborn patients in L&D, newborn nursery, and intensive care unit during their scheduled shift.
  • Performing physical exams, determining differential diagnosis, and prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments in the direct management of acute and chronic conditions.
  • Ensuring that an adequate medical record is maintained for each patient seen and treated during their shift
  • Providing appropriate procedural tasks as needed (PPV, intubation, central lines, chest tubes, etc.).
  • Participating in self and peer evaluation to improve quality of care.
  • Collaborating in the development, review and evaluation of policies and procedures.
  • Participating in developing and implementing QI monitoring.
  • Acting as a resource for clinical skills for staff
  • Understanding the opportunity to participate in clinical research
  • Serving as a preceptor to students
  • Performing other related work as needed
