About the College/Unit/Department
The University of Georgia is establishing a new independent School of Medicine in Athens, building on the success of the Augusta University / University of Georgia Medical Partnership, which has been educating physicians in Athens since 2010.
The establishment of a new public medical school at UGA comes as the state faces a significant shortage of medical professionals. The population of Georgia, the nation's eighth largest state, has surged to approximately 11 million residents, straining existing medical infrastructure and resulting in longer wait times for appointments and reduced access to care. Georgia currently ranks 40th in the nation for the number of active patient care physicians per capita and 41st for the number of public medical students per capita.
As a top 20 public university with a thriving research enterprise and vast public service network, the University of Georgia is well positioned to produce more highly trained physicians, alleviate physician shortages, and improve the state's ability to provide quality health care for its citizens.
The School of Medicine will be located on UGA's Health Sciences Campus in Athens, home to UGA's College of Public Health and the AU/ UGA Medical Partnership. The Medical Partnership currently enrolls 60 students per class, but a $100 million new medical school building, to be funded by a 1:1 public / private match, will enable the UGA School of Medicine to grow to 120 students per class in the future.
The University of Georgia School of Medicine has been formally recognized as an applicant for accreditation after being granted Applicant Status by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education ( LCME), beginning a multi-year accreditation process.

Minimum Qualifications
Requires at least a baccalaureate degree in the field. Please contact your Human Resources office for an evaluation of education/experience in lieu of the required minimum qualifications.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
  • 5-7 or more years of human resources experience, preferably in healthcare or higher education fields

  • SHRM/HRCI Certification

Position Summary
The Director of Human Resources will play a pivotal role in the establishment and growth of the University of Georgia's School of Medicine. This position will act as the primary HR strategic partner and liaison to leaders, managers, and employees of the School of Medicine. In collaboration with unit leadership and the University Human Resources office, the Director of Human Resources will be responsible for assessing all HR needs related to human resource management, policies, procedures, employment law, and fundamentals of all core areas of human resources and ensure ease of access to HR deliverables for the School of Medicine and its academic, research, and clinical affairs missions.
This position will develop partnerships across the UGA community to deliver value-added service to management and employees that is reflective of unit- and institution-wide objectives.
Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with unit leadership and department heads (chairs) to develop and implement human resources initiatives that support organizational goals.
  • Interpreting and applying human resources policies and procedures to ensure compliance with relevant regulations and best practices.
  • In concert with University Human Resources, advising on compensation and pay strategies, as well as advising on other university and systems policies.
  • Providing guidance and support on employee relations issues, including performance management, disciplinary actions, and conflict resolution.
  • Overseeing recruitment and onboarding of new employees, ensuring a smooth transition into the organization.


The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in human resources leadership, strong interpersonal skills, and a deep understanding of best practices in Human Resources.

Human Resources Operations

  • Serve as the primary contact between University Human Resources subject matter experts and School of Medicine leaders, managers, and employees.
  • Manage and oversee all HR functions in multiple systems, including employment, recruitment and retention, compensation, time and leave administration, performance management, benefits, organizational development, and employee relations.
  • Supervise, review, and approve document submission for HR processes, such as position descriptions, job postings, recruitment plans, interview process, and hiring.
  • Provide guidance and training to unit leaders, managers, and employees on current or new HR requirements at the University; educate on current and new policies and procedures.
  • Facilitate discussions with University Human Resources and unit leadership to evaluate compensation needs; consult on salary administration for new hires, reclassification, reorganizations, promotion, and other compensation changes.
  • Create and implement plans to develop talent within the unit and assess development needs.
  • Oversee orientation and onboarding, as well as offboarding, of employees.

  • Manage employee and faculty relations issues within the School of Medicine and partner with central offices, such as University Human Resources, Office of Faculty Affairs, Legal Affairs, EOO, as necessary. Ensure appropriate documentation of disciplinary actions.
  • Coordinate, facilitate, and participate in preparing and conducting employee grievances and appeals. May participate in administrative activities such as unemployment, Worker's Compensation, and other employment-related programs.
  • Provide coaching and advising on strategies to proactively create a positive work environment.
  • Provide guidance on performance management and addressing potential personnel challenges, ensuring employees and managers understand and adhere to HR policies and procedures.
