Job Summary

We are seeking a responsible individual to perform the daily operations of the Hawthorn Glen Outdoor Education Center and the Little Nature Museum.

EMPLOYMENT TYPE: Part time seasonal.

HOURLY RATE: $13.00

HOURS PER WEEK: 4-20

Position Summary

  • Responsible for daily tasks of the Little Nature Museum, especially care of the resident animals.
  • Serve as liaison for permit groups.
  • Maintain general property safety and security for buildings, grounds and trails.
  • Ensure proper forms for the Nature Museum are completed and submitted on a daily basis.
  • Inventory food, medication and necessary equipment for animals in the Little Nature Museum and report to Lead Animal Care Attendant.
  • Record daily attendance of playfield and submit daily.
  • Maintain good order of equipment and supplies.
  • Complete general cleaning and upkeep of the building before, during and after shift. This includes garbage removal and stocking of paper products in bathrooms.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of Milwaukee Recreation and Hawthorn Glen rules, policies and procedures.
  • Perform appropriate opening and closing procedures.
Supervision Required

Reports to the Lead Animal Care Attendant, Outdoor Education Resource and Recreation Supervisor.

Job Requirements

Experience

  • Previous work with children and adults.
  • College coursework and practical experience in natural sciences/outdoor education/animal care.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of animal care.
  • Ability to work outside in a variety of weather conditions.
  • Ability to hike on trails and uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work well with limited supervision and demonstrate flexibility.
  • Ability to make independent decisions and respond to immediate needs of participants and emergency situations.
  • Ability to complete necessary paperwork.
  • Leadership and communication skills.
  • Display a positive attitude and effectively communicate with participants and staff.
  • Willingness to work varied hours and days.
Working Environment

This work environment includes physical activity such as hiking, lifting at least 40 lbs., working in all weather conditions and cleaning, feeding and caring for animals.
