Summary of Role The Senior Director of Medical Affairs Operations is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing and optimizing the operational functions of the Medical Affairs department. This role is essential in ensuring the efficient and compliant execution of medical strategies and initiatives. The successful candidate will bring strong leadership, strategic thinking, and project management skills to drive operational excellence and support the overall mission of the Medical Affairs team. The Senior Director will manage day-to-day operations, lead process improvements, ensure regulatory compliance, and cultivate a high-performing team, all while fostering collaboration across multiple departments. Key Responsibilities/Essential Functions Operational Leadership:
- Oversee the day-to-day operations of the Medical Affairs department, ensuring the efficient execution of medical strategies and initiatives
- Develop and implement operational plans, policies, and procedures to enhance department efficiency and effectiveness
- Lead the development and management of departmental budgets, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and objectives
Team Leadership and Development:
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing Medical Affairs Operations team including IST and medical clinical operations functions.
- Foster a positive and collaborative team culture, promoting professional growth and development.
- Conduct regular performance reviews, provide feedback, and develop individual development plans for team members.
Program Management:
- Manage and coordinate multiple projects and initiatives within the Medical Affairs department, ensuring timely and successful completion
- Implement project management best practices, tools, and methodologies to drive operational efficiency and excellence
- Monitor project progress, identify potential risks, and develop mitigation plans to ensure project success
Process Improvement:
- Identify opportunities for process improvement and implement changes to enhance operational efficiency and effectiveness
- Develop and maintain key performance indicators (KPIs) to measure and track departmental performance
- Foster a culture of continuous improvement within the Medical Affairs department
Cross-Functional Collaboration:
- Collaborate with other departments, including R&D, Commercial, Regulatory, and Legal, to support the execution of medical strategies and initiatives
- Serve as a key liaison between the Medical Affairs department and other internal and external stakeholders
- Provide operational support for cross-functional projects and initiatives
Compliance and Quality Assurance:
- Ensure all Medical Affairs activities comply with relevant regulatory requirements, industry standards, and company policies
- Oversee the development and implementation of quality assurance processes and procedures to ensure high standards of operational excellence
Basic Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in life sciences, healthcare, business administration, or a related field; advanced degree (e.g., MBA, MPH) preferred
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in the pharmaceutical or biotechnology industry, with at least 6 years in Medical Affairs operations
- Strong track record of leadership and management experience in a Medical Affairs or related operational role
- In-depth knowledge of Medical Affairs processes, regulatory requirements, and industry standards.
- Excellent project management skills, with a proven ability to manage multiple projects and initiatives simultaneously
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a focus on data-driven decision-making
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with cross-functional teams and stakeholder
- Demonstrated ability to lead and develop high-performing teams
- Proficiency in project management software and tools
- Ability to travel as needed to support business objectives
Other Requirements
- Preferred certification in project management (e.g., PMP, Six Sigma).
- This position is site-based and requires a presence on-site of 3 days per week in Bedford, MA when not traveling.
