Staff Payroll Accountant
Gaithersburg, MD

Your Tasks:

Responsible for coordinating and performing payroll activities; processing time records, compiling payroll statistics, maintaining payroll control records, calculating payrolls and tax returns. The Staff Payroll Accountant is also responsible for preparing journal entries, maintaining and reconciling general ledger accounts.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Process payroll according to corporate policies and Federal/State Employment Laws utilizing automated payroll and payroll related software, including exempt, non-exempt, commissions, bonuses, and terminations.
  • Process approved paperwork submitted by human resources, employees, and government agencies.
  • Analyze and reconcile G/L accounts minimally monthly including, but not limited to: Employee Receivable, prepaid expenses, accrued payroll and benefit liability accounts, and accrued taxes; Income, Sales, Payroll. Review all personnel expense categories.
  • Reconcile and balance Tax and Wage Reporting by comparing W2s/Quarterly/Annual Employee/Employer Tax Reports, SAP Expense and Liabilities GL Accounts, payroll details, workman's comp audits and ad hoc reports for financial reporting and tax filings.
  • Assist with and collect accurate and timely financial reporting, audit and tax preparation, consolidation and ad hoc reporting.
  • Identify, review, investigate, and resolve problems/inconsistencies in financial entries, document and report and suggest appropriate corrective procedures in areas of responsibility; elevate issues as necessary.


Requirements:



  • Bachelor's degree in business, Finance, Accounting, or a related field; A minimum of 4 years of progressive payroll experience in a complex environment with a focus on training, account reconciliations, project administration and process improvement; Or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • A minimum of 2-4 years' experience in multi-state payroll.


Skills:



  • Significant knowledge of payroll and time management.
  • HR and ERP software (UKG, UTM, ADP, SAP).
  • Strong knowledge of MS Office (Outlook, Teams, Excel).
  • Strong knowledge of US GAAP.
  • Strong knowledge of payroll compliance and employment tax (FLSA, 941, W-2).
  • Proactive mindset with the ability to identify opportunities for process improvement.
  • Demonstrate accountability and acts with the strictest of confidentiality.
  • Strong communicator both written and verbal across all levels of the organization.
  • Ability to analyze data to drive decisions.
  • Ability to train others on payroll, time management, HR and ERP systems.
  • Ability to multi-task and work effectively under tight deadlines.
