General Summary/Overview Statement:
-The Adult Genetics Clinic at Brigham and Women's Hospital focuses exclusively on the care of adult patients. We provide care for individuals in need of genetic risk assessment, genetic diagnosis, genetic testing, genetic counseling, or management of genetic disease. Care is provided by clinicians in Genetics and in each of the specialty Divisions within the Department of Medicine who have received dual training in internal medicine and medical genetics. The geneticists and genetic counselors are experts in the diagnosis, family recruitment, management, and counseling issues related to adult-onset disease as well as the care of adults with genetic disease diagnosed in childhood. We work collaboratively with other specialists at our institution throughout the Harvard Medical affiliates, and throughout the world. The Adult Genetics Clinic also offers polygenic risk assessment, exome and genome sequencing as a clinical service to patients for the diagnosis and clinical management and is directly aligned with novel gene/undiagnosed disease programs in each of the Divisions within the Department of Medicine.
Core responsibilities:
Genetic Counselor (75%)
Adult Genetics Clinic - 6 sessions per week
-Participates in diagnostic evaluations in the Genetics Clinic at BWH and other BWH clinical programs as needed. Obtains and analyzes family history, reviews clinic information on patients, performs research as necessary, and coordinates genetic and diagnostic testing of proband and family members. Reviews information with physicians, provides documentation of conclusions, and follows-up on outstanding laboratory data, including ensuring results have been communicated to patients.
-Provides genetic counseling services through BWH clinics as well as other clinical programs in the Partners system as needed. Interprets family history, clinical findings and laboratory data to provide counseling for individuals or families at risk for specific hereditary disorders.
Program Manager (25%)
Adult Genetics Clinic
-Referral management - reviews all incoming referrals into the adult genetics program and ensures appropriate scheduling with genetics counselor or physician.
-Oversees the coordination of staff necessary for multidisciplinary clinic visits in complex case management and in undiagnosed disease cases
Oversees coordination of clinical evaluation and consenting visits
Qualifications:
-Master's degree from a program accredited by the American Board of Genetic Counseling.
-Board certification or board eligibility as a genetic counselor by the American Board of Medical Genetics or the American Board of Genetic Counseling is required.
-Massachusetts state licensure required.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
-Work requires experience with computer programs including proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access.
-Work requires strong communication skills that allow effective interaction with both medical professionals and patients or families.
-Work requires creativity, efficiency, strong organization skills and the ability to work independently to effectively organize and implement research projects, when necessary.
-Work requires excellent written communication at both medical and lay levels.
