Position Summary

A full-time position is available for a staff scientist/lab manager to join the Endicott laboratory, in the UNM HSC Department of Pathology. The lab's multi-disciplinary research program will use a combination of quantitative proteomics, biochemistry, microscopy, and cell biology to address fundamental questions pertaining to chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA). CMA is a selective form of lysosomal proteolysis, which through selective degradation of rate-limiting enzymes, regulates essential metabolic processes.

The successful applicant will work under the direction of an Assistant Professor. The primary responsibilities will be conducting experiments in molecular biology and biochemistry. The applicant should have a familiarity with most basic laboratory techniques such as preparing DNA, RNA, and protein extracts from cells and mouse tissues, running DNA and protein gels, setting up PCR reactions, making solutions, and performing cell culture. The ideal applicant should be able to perform advanced techniques in cell culture, including gene knockdowns, overexpression, and drug does curves. The candidate will be expected to learn, develop, and perform new experimental protocols, depending on the needs of the lab. Other responsibilities will include data analysis, making figures, PowerPoint presentations.

Candidates who (in addition to the aforementioned skills) have training and experience with laboratory mice will be given preference.

It is expected that the new hire will work in a team-oriented setting, and will be expected to provide technical guidance and mentorship to less experienced team members. The new hire will have the opportunity to train undergraduate students, but this is not mandatory.

In addition to research responsibilities, the successful applicant will spend one day per week maintaining detailed inventory records of valuable samples and laboratory supplies. The new hire will place orders, as needed, and will approve the orders of junior lab members.
