Position Highlights

Office of Societal Impact at the University of Arizona in Research, Innovation, and Impact, is excited to accept applications for Career Strategies Professional for the Astronomical Software Engineering Career/Internship Program. Students with backgrounds in Astronomy and skilled to handle unique software challenges created by massive datasets are critical for current and future missions collecting very large amounts of data. A new program, Astronomical Software Engineering Program, will develop educational opportunities and career pathways for undergrad students in pursuing astrophysics software development. The Program Coordinator will develop, implement, and lead all aspects of the new program including student recruitment, industry partner development, student advising and mentoring, and training/workshop development leading to job searches and overall workforce development. The incumbent will coordinate with IMESTEP to build and sustain a student internship program to provide software development training and career development opportunities.

Duties & Responsibilities

Duties & responsibilities:

* Operate as the primary administrator for the TIMESTEP Astronomical Software Engineering Program.

* Coordination with industry and partners:

* Plan, develop, and coordinate internship opportunities for students with entities/partners central to astrophysics and software development.

* Student outreach and programming:

* Develop and implement effective recruitment strategies for engaging undergrad students in program; assess and revise approaches for improved outcomes.

* Organize and facilitate weekly meetings with students and program coordinators to support internship experience; supervise graduate student coordinators, and

* Develop and oversee effective student mentoring structure and meetings for coordinators and interns, to assist interns in pursuing career exploration, developing career paths, networks, and job searches.

* Create workshop and/or training materials to support students in career exploration and career development, student recruitment and outreach, etc.

* Coordinate student opportunities with TIMESTEP programming; expand student training and career development experience by initiating and coordinating with other campus entities and groups.

* Program administration:

* Lead on program documentation and reporting including communication, student data, outcome metrics, and development process.

* Additional duties may be assigned

Knowledge, skills, and abilities:

* Exceptional oral and written communication and organizational skills.

* Demonstrated skills in public speaking, workshop facilitation, and/or teaching.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional level experience required and a minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in coordinating, implementing, and developing programs, workshops, and meetings.
  • Experience in outreach, team development, and/or student mentoring/training.
  • Experience in software development, software industry, or workforce development activities.
  • Experience working with students in education settings.
  • Experience in student outreach or advising.
