DESCRIPTION

The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UCSD School of Medicine and is responsible for fulfilling the teaching, research, and clinical missions of the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. The department employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, 168 academic appointees, 331 residents, fellow and postdocs and 479 staff personnel.

Under general supervision from the PI, the incumbent will independently perform a range of in vitro and in vivo assays to support the development of new therapies for rare cardiovascular disorders including western blot, gene expression analysis, immunohistochemisrtry. Along with the molecular and cellular biological research, the incumbent will independently analyze and present experimental data and interact with multidisciplinary team. The incumbent will be responsible for implementing and performing a variety of new experimental protocols, making significant contributions to the laboratory. Evaluate ongoing experimental procedures on a continuous basis for efficacy and data significance, identifying areas in need of change and recommend modifications as required. Will perform ultrasound cardiovascular physiologic image acquisition, process and compile statistics. Perform hemodynamic, transvers aortic constriction, retro-orbital injection, intro cardiac injection, telemetry ECG and blood pressure transmitter implantation, data processing of hemodynamic (invasive) and echocardiograms (non-invasive) including compiling statistics and image analysis, which include tracing boundaries, calculating blood velocities, and measuring cardiac dimensions. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • Advanced theoretical knowledge and practical experience in molecular biology, biochemistry, mathematics and computer software.

  • Demonstrated experience organizing a laboratory in a higher education institution.

  • Demonstrated experience monitoring viability of cell lines, freeze, thaw and culture using sterile techniques.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand the specific protocol of each experiment and the procedures for calculating the primary data.

  • Proven knowledge of basic DNA amplification, molecular biology techniques.

  • Demonstrated knowledge and skills necessary to perform calculation of experimental results.

  • Experience in utilizing proper safety procedures.

  • Demonstrated strong interpersonal, as well as written and verbal communication skills to communicate effectively at all levels of the organization (faculty, staff, and students).

  • Demonstrated experience using scientific software and similar programs for data analysis. Ability to perform detailed work with accuracy and in the time period required.

  • Demonstrated critical thinking skills with the ability to follow detailed protocols, knowledge of complex laboratory procedures.

  • Demonstrated ability to perform standard biochemical assays.

  • Demonstrated ability to supervise and instruct in a professional and constructive manner and to adapt to the demands of the diverse research projects in the laboratory.

  • Demonstrated ability to understand the specific protocol of each experiment and the procedures for calculating the primary data.

  • Willingness to adapt to stressful circumstances such as grant and manuscript preparation and submission.

  • Solid knowledge and skills in small animal surgery.

  • Basic knowledge of computer applications used for cardiovascular physiology research and analysis, specifically LabChart Pro, MatLab, PVAN, Sheehan method, and VisualSonics software.

  • Strong demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions to effectively communicate with investigators, Veterinary Services, staff and students to assist with scheduling of procedures and transferring animals from the vivarium to Seaweed lab for procedures.

  • Willingness to learn new techniques and tasks and the ability to share this knowledge with other professionals.

  • Strong demonstrated ability to prioritize tasks. Good time management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to perform basic statistical data evaluation using Microsoft Excel, Sigma Plot, and Prism.

  • Demonstrate ability to effectively communicate data results in a verbal and written manner to collaborators.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Knowledge of UCSD Oracle and other outside vendor suppliers for laboratory supplies and equipment.

  • Knowledge of UC and EH&S laboratory safety procedures (particularly concerning radioactive materials).

SPECIAL CONDITIONS
  • Employment is subject to a criminal background check.

  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends, when necessary.

Pay Transparency Act

Annual Full Pay Range: $66,441 - $106,839 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%)

Hourly Equivalent: $31.82 - $51.17

Factors in determining the appropriate compensation for a role include experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, and other business and organizational needs. The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
