Overview:

We are seeking a Protection Systems Engineer who will focus on development and support of PLC based safety systems designed to protect people from special hazards arising from Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) operations. This position resides in the Protection Systems Group in the Controls System Section, Research Accelerator Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).

As part of our team, you will implement and maintain high-reliability electronic safety interlock systems for personnel protection from unique facility hazards arising primarily from prompt ionizing radiation and oxygen deficiency. The team is responsible for all life-cycle phases of electronic safety interlock equipment used for accelerator, target, instrument, and test-bed Personnel Protection Systems (PPS). The team also supports the documentation, quality, operation, and maintenance of these systems after they are placed into service, including developing procedures and performing annual certifications. You will work with scientists, engineers, technicians, management, and operations to ensure the functionality and integrity of the protection systems is always maintained.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Act as a system engineer for assigned safety control systems and subject areas.

  • Contribute to development and maintenance of high reliability engineered safety controls used to protect personnel at SNS from potential facility hazards.

  • Implement SNS configuration management processes for safety control equipment and assist other groups in maintaining configuration of their equipment affecting safety critical systems.

  • Translate performance and operational needs into system requirements.

  • Develop and direct test plans and procedures that demonstrate systems readiness.

  • Ensure and monitor compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements.

  • Promptly identify and communicate environmental, safety, health (ESH) and quality assurance (QA) issues to group and division management and ESH and QA contacts.

Basic Qualifications:

  • A BS degree in electrical engineering, industrial controls, computer science or related field with at least 5 years of applicable experience.

  • Demonstrated experience designing and implementing PLC based control systems using system engineering principles and including requirements development, PLC programming and formal testing methodologies.

  • Demonstrates proficiency in written and verbal communication, including experience presenting technical information clearly to audiences with varying levels of technical expertise, including senior management.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • An MS degree in computer science, electrical engineering, or related field.

  • Experience implementing Allen-Bradley ControlLogix and GuardLogix PLC industrial controls and software.

  • Experience developing systems within the framework of IEC 15288, 61508, IEC 61511, or IEC 62061.

  • Experience developing policies, procedures, and guidelines for the implementation of high reliability systems.

  • Skilled at working independently, proactively solving project challenges, and collaborating effectively in team settings.

  • Strong critical thinking skills, with the ability to adapt to ever evolving priorities and resolve conflicts.

  • Experience with accelerator protection systems or other process control systems at a scientific user facility is highly preferred.

Special Requirements:

  • Work involves various physical requirements and working conditions. As such, a pre-hire physical will be required after offer.

  • This position requires access to technology that is subject to export control requirements. Successful candidates must be qualified for such access without an export control license.

  • SNS operates 24/7 for approximately 5,000 hours per year. The engineer will be required to support systems by responding to off-hours calls and performing on-site repairs as needed. This responsibility will be part of a rotating duty schedule.
