Sr Manager, Software Engineering

We are seeking an experienced and innovative software development leader to manage and drive a cross-functional development team supporting Cox Communications' network teams, with a focus on enhancing the reliability and scalability of our IP and Optical backbone. This role combines expertise in software development with a deep understanding of IP and optical networking, including emerging trends in artificial intelligence and machine learning, to deliver cutting-edge solutions for network forecasting, planning, automation, and visibility. This position is part of the Network Engineering team, which collaborates with various engineering and operational organizations to ensure the best possible network experience for Cox customers.

Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions:

  • Team Leadership and Management
    • Lead and mentor a team of software developers responsible for designing, developing, testing, and documenting software applications and automation systems for network operations.
    • Foster a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and collaboration within the team.
  • Software Development and Network Expertise
    • Oversee the development of tools and platforms for network forecast modeling, workflow automation, and configuration management.
    • Leverage machine learning and large language models (LLMs) to innovate and optimize network planning and operational processes.
  • Strategic Planning and Collaboration
    • Partner with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to define and execute strategies that align with organizational goals.
    • Lead discussions across functional groups to identify and validate solution strategies, initiatives, and deliverables.
  • Solution Design and Implementation
    • Guide solution design activities, including data modeling, data transformation, analytics, and visualization.
    • Deploy technologies such as APIs, user-facing front-ends, and data visualizations to enhance operational systems and processes.
  • Network Analytics and Performance Monitoring
    • Develop analytics dashboards and real-time data models to monitor network trends and drive proactive adaptations.
    • Create actionable recommendations based on quantitative data analysis to address changes in network performance.
  • Emerging Technologies and Innovation
    • Evaluate and integrate new technologies, such as AI, LLMs, and big data platforms, to address evolving network requirements.
    • Rapidly prototype applications and platforms to demonstrate feasibility and drive adoption.


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Management Information Systems, or a related discipline and 8 years' experience in a related field.
  • The right candidate could also have a different combination, such as a master's degree and 6 years' experience; a Ph.D. and 3 years' experience in a related field; or 12 years' experience in a related field
  • 3+ years' experience managing a team of software developers.
  • Experience with machine learning and AI technologies, particularly Large Language Models (LLMs.)
  • Experience with big data concepts and network streaming telemetry data
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects from inception through delivery.


Preferred Skills:

  • Hands-on experience with RESTful APIs and application development.
  • Knowledge of IP and optical networking, including related tools and technologies.
  • Knowledge of network planning, reliability engineering, and performance optimization.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Understanding of network fundamentals, including TCP/IP routing, MPLS, BGP, capacity planning and routing/switching hardware infrastructure a plus.
  • Prior experience working for a network service provider with 99.999% uptime expectations.


USD 131,600.00 - 219,400.00 per year

Compensation:

Compensation includes a base salary of $131,600.00 - $219,400.00. The base salary may vary within the anticipated base pay range based on factors such as the ultimate location of the position and the selected candidate's knowledge, skills, and abilities. Position may be eligible for additional compensation that may include an incentive program.

Benefits:

The Company offers eligible employees the flexibility to take as much vacation with pay as they deem consistent with their duties, the company's needs, and its obligations; seven paid holidays throughout the calendar year; and up to 160 hours of paid wellness annually for their own wellness or that of family members. Employees are also eligible for additional paid time off in the form of bereavement leave, time off to vote, jury duty leave, volunteer time off, military leave, and parental leave.
