How You'll Help Transform Healthcare:
  • Communicates directly with patients, families, physicians, staff, volunteers and the public. Has specific responsibility for Hospice Volunteer Services. Serves as a resource to staff, volunteers and the community. Demonstrates effective communication skills. Conveys a caring and compassionate manner to all clients.
  • Moderate risk of exposure to infectious diseases, inclement weather, travel risks, home visits in variety of areas. Moderate stress related to working with distressed and distraught clients.
  • Works on special Hospice projects as directed by Hospice Management.
  • Age-specific criteria: Must be prepared and able to work with clients of all ages

Develops the Hospice volunteer Services program in the respective Hospice office. Provides supervision and support to the Hospice Volunteers. Functions as part of the Interdisciplinary Hospice Team. Acts as a liaison to the Carilion Clinic Foundation. Works collaboratively with the Foundation, representing all Carilion Clinic Hospice programs. Is knowledgeable of software used by the Foundation and maintains competencies in the use of that software. Researches availability of grant funding, writes funding applications, coordinates and leads the activities of a viable grant program.

  • Responsible for Hospice Volunteer recruitment, training, annual credentialing, continuing education and retention activities. Assists with volunteer recruitment, training and supervision for community events as directed by management.
  • Attends Interdepartmental Team (IDT) meetings. Performs Volunteer assessments to identify Hospice patients or families in need of volunteer services. Collaborates with IDT members and intervenes appropriately. Follows through with referrals to available volunteers. Matches skills and personalities of volunteers to the patients. Volunteer coordinator will maintain or exceed a minimum of 5% of hospice worked hours in volunteer hours to comply with CMS conditions of participation.
  • Educates volunteers to their assignments. Make supervisory visits to monitor compatibility with patient and satisfaction with services. Addresses volunteer performance and disciplinary issues as necessary.
  • Maintains Volunteer files in keeping with regulatory requirements. Submits current list of volunteers to Compliance Department on a monthly basis for Office of Inspector General (OIG) cross check.
  • Provides oversight to the environmental safety issues for the volunteers in the various work settings.
  • Demonstrates excellent communication skills and practices confidentiality at all times. Teaches classes or gives public presentations as requested by Manager or Director.
  • Acts as a liaison to the Carilion Clinic Foundation. Strategizes with Foundation representatives regarding fundraising opportunities.
  • Participates in training activities surrounding Foundation software, policies processes. Participates in the development of necessary infrastructure to support expansion and enhancement of Foundation activities.
  • Researches grant programs and writes funding applications. Identifies new opportunities for funding sources and actively and appropriately develops a plan to secure.
  • Tracks all incoming hospice donations and submits for deposit. Prepares quarterly or annual reports regarding grant use and submits to the Senior Director. Prepares compliance reports as required by contributors. Prioritizes, plans, schedules and communicates activities to guide program efficiency and effectiveness.
What We Require:

Education: Must have Bachelor's Degree in allied healthcare related field or equivalent 8 years experience required.

Experience: Must have two years' experience in working with health care related programs or adult volunteers. Experience working with terminally ill patients and interdisciplinary team is preferred???????

Licensure, certification, and/or registration: Must have valid Virginia Driver's license, use of an automobile with appropriate automobile insurance in order to make home visits/funeral visits as required.

Other Minimum Qualifications: Must pass Virginia State Police Criminal Records Exchange Criminal Records Check as processed by Carilion Human Resources. Must demonstrate willingness to be available for patient/staff/community crises. Should live within local access for phone/pager network.
