Position Description

Provides advanced veterinary anesthesia and surgery skills with respect to the care, management, and treatment of animals used in the teaching and research program of the Texas Tech School University of Veterinary Medicine (TTU SVM). This job would involve instruction of veterinary students in clinical and professional skills laboratories involving multiple species including physical examination, anesthesia, surgical, medical, handling, and communication situations. The individual must be willing and able to follow-up on all animal health issues daily. At times this will require weekend and holiday care of sick animals. As TTU SVM does not have a teaching hospital, duties will be primarily within the pre-clinical program.

Major/Essential Functions


    • Knowledge and proficiency in veterinary technical skills with an emphasis in anesthesia and surgery
    • Monitoring and assessment of surgical patients in conjunction with overseeing students
    • Organization and delivery of clinical and professional skills laboratories
    • Teaching and assessment of veterinary students within clinical and professional skills laboratories
    • Performance of diagnostic testing and acquisition of diagnostic imaging
    • Administration of medications
    • Maintenance of veterinary equipment including instrument sterilization and anesthesia equipment
    • Inventory and purchasing of associated veterinary equipment and supplies
    • Provision of general nursing care
    • Use of electronic medical record systems.
    • Ability to routinely lift 50 pounds or less independently.
    • At times this will require weekend and holiday care of sick animals. As TTU SVM does not have a teaching hospital, duties will be primarily within the pre-clinical program.

    Required Qualifications

    High School Diploma or GED equivalent. Three years of experience with veterinary anesthesia and surgical techniques. Fostering the Core Values of the School of Veterinary Medicine.

    Preferred Qualifications


    • Experience with veterinary anesthesia and surgical techniques
    • Graduate of AVMA licensed veterinary technician program with licensure
    • Experience with both large and companion animal anesthesia and surgery
