Position Description

Performs highly responsible personal, educational or other counseling and/or training to individuals or groups. Responsibilities involve the provision of counseling services to individuals and groups in order that these individuals might achieve more effective personal, social, educational, and/or vocational development. Work is performed under general supervision with much latitude for independent judgment. Performance evaluation is based on the appropriateness and effectiveness of selected counseling methods and techniques and the attainment of other desired objectives. May supervise other counselors.

Major/Essential Functions


  • Clinical Services to Students: Conduct initial assessments (triages) during Walk-In Clinic hours (and during other hours, as needed) in a timely and efficient manner. Outreach Programming to Campus Community: Actively participate in departmental outreach efforts, including fostering effective working relationships with campus liaisons and providing consultation services to university faculty and staff.
  • Clinical Services to Students: Provide individual, group, and couples therapy to Texas Tech students in an ethical and effective manner.
  • Other duties as assigned by Managing Director or Unit Associate Director.
  • Professional Licensure: Achieve professional licensure consistent with employee's highest mental health degree (specific employment-contingent deadline will be set by Director); maintain licensure on a continual basis throughout employment tenure.
  • Other Clinical Responsibilities: Complete all clinical documentation in a timely and efficient manner in accordance with departmental policies & procedures.
  • Clinical Supervision of Trainees: Provide clinical supervision and other training-related activities to doctoral interns and graduate practicum students.
  • Other Departmental Responsibilities: Actively participate in other departmental activities including, but not limited to, staff meetings, other departmental committees, and position search committees.
  • Clinical Services to Students: Provide crisis intervention services to students (may include after-hours intervention).

Required Qualifications

Master's degree in related area or bachelor's degree with pending graduate or doctoral degree to be completed by time of appointment. Thorough knowledge of the application and evaluation of testing and counseling techniques. Ability to conceptualize and prioritize goals and objectives. Ability to relate to people from all walks of life and communicate effectively with them.
