The Mellon College of Science (MCS) is a vibrant organization for dynamic collaboration. Home to four departments - Biological Sciences, Chemistry, Mathematical Sciences, and Physics - MCS also hosts many programs and research centers that cross disciplines.

The MCS communications team is seeking an Associate Director of Research Marketing and Communications. Working under the direction of the college's Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications, the Associate Director of Research Marketing and Communications will play an important role in increasing the visibility of the college through disseminating and communicating news and information internally and externally. This is an exciting role for someone passionate about sharing the impact of scholarly research and taking a creative, brand-driven approach to managing digital content. Candidates with a strong background in science-based communications are particularly encouraged to apply.

Core responsibilities include:

  • Sourcing and evaluating opportunities for promotion and communication of scholarly research in the social sciences conducted by Mellon College of Science faculty and students.
  • Developing and writing/producing content tailored to key audiences. This includes, but is not limited to: articles and press releases; videos; faculty, student and alumni profiles; and marketing copy.
  • Working closely with subject matter experts to conduct media relations, including identifying and working with University Communications and Marketing to pitch news to national, local and trade media.
  • Leading the creation of the college's bimonthly Dean's Dispatch e-newsletter and weekly MCS Minute e-newsletter.
  • Identifying and coordinating visuals for stories, social media and other materials, working in partnership with photographers, videographers and designers.
  • Collaborating with staff across Mellon College of Science, University Communications and Marketing and other academic schools and colleges.
  • Attending and covering events, as needed.
  • Serving as a backup to the Associate Dean of Marketing and Communications, when needed.

You should demonstrate:

  • Ability to work independently and effectively, managing multiple projects simultaneously in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with subject matter experts.
  • Demonstrated understanding of peer-reviewed, scholarly research and how to accurately communicate academic topics to general audiences in an engaging manner.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in English, communications, journalism or a related field.
  • At least 3-5 years of experience writing or producing videos for communication and marketing channels.
  • Excellent editing and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office.
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite, in particular Adobe Premiere, and/or Canva is extremely helpful, but not required.
