Demonstrating practical knowledge and expertise in all general areas of anesthesia. The certified anesthesia technician must have thorough knowledge of the set-up, operation and troubleshooting of anesthesia delivery systems, monitors, and ancillary devices. The certified anesthesia technicians will maintain a sufficient inventory of all equipment and supplies. Being knowledgeable of all guidelines, policies and safety requirements as determined by all relevant regulatory and standard setting agencies or organizations. Performing effectively in the area where anesthesia is provided, assisting the licensed anesthesia provider with assessments, evaluations, transport, positioning, insertion of intravenous and other invasive lines, and airway management. Cleans, sterilizes, and sets up all types of anesthesia equipment and their components including blood gas equipment, anesthesia machines, venous and arterial pressure lines, endotracheal tubes, nasopharyngeal tubes, vaporizers, ventilators, EKG monitors, blood warmers, infusion pumps, Bair hugger. Checks, cleans and maintains anesthesia machines daily, refilling vaporizers with anesthetic agents, changing the soda lime, changing the nitrous, oxygen and air cylinders as needed, and checking for leakages. Calibrates Anesthesia machine monitors to appropriate settings for each Case. Ensures an adequate inventory of all equipment and supplies related to anesthesia machines, ventilators, monitoring equipment, pressure transducers, endotracheal tubes, spinal and block trays, non-narcotic medications. Ensures that medications, drugs and anesthetics are properly stored and refrigerated and properly disposed of when unusable. Assists anesthesiologists as needed during surgery. Places orders to ensure adequate inventory and follow up with appropriate sources to ensure their delivery. Carries out policies and procedures set by the Infection Control Unit to ensure compliance. Performs related duties and assignments as required to ensure smooth and effective operation of the Anesthesia Department. Uses computer applications or other automated systems such as spread sheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail, and database software in performing work assignments. May assist with training residents in the use of anesthesia machines and related equipment Follows procedure for decontamination of all instruments used during the procedure. Adheres to safety and infection control policies; demonstrates knowledge and skills in waste disposal and standard precautions. Major Functions/Performance Expectations 1. Competencies Demonstrates knowledge of the equipment in the department, how to operate and troubleshoot, and mechanism for initiating repairs. An understanding of advanced life support Demonstrates the ability to perform technical duties in complex clinical situations Understands medical terminology as it relates to anesthesia equipment and related supplies Demonstrates knowledge and practice of basic patient care related to anesthesia. Responds and assists in emergency situations. Demonstrates the ability to coordinate the daily routine of technical anesthesia staff. Ability to delegate responsibilities to other members of the anesthesia technical team. Understands the costs that are incurred for anesthesia procedure 2. Administrative Functions Participates in the interview process to select the most qualified candidate for vacant positions. Plans advance time schedules, which provide adequate coverage on a twenty-four-hour/seven day a week basis; plans work assignments, which meet patient and departmental needs. Investigates and intervenes in problem situations; reporting appropriate information through appropriate channels. Maintains knowledge of current trends. Maintains and organizes anesthesia cart and specialized anesthesia carts as assigned. 3. Develops and maintains quality control records and logs. Maintains records of quality control done daily. Maintains records of maintenance of patient monitors, analyzers, and computers. 4. Medical Center Policy and Procedure & Safety Related Performance Standards Supports and complies with all Medical Center and departmental policies and procedures. Attends all mandatory in-services, continuing education, annual health requirements, etc. Identifies, corrects, or reports safety hazards and incidents immediately. Applies safety-related policies and procedures pertaining to the department or work area. Performs according to the Medical Centers Disaster and Fire Manuals instructions when necessary. Lifts and moves objects safely. Follows the Hazardous Materials Management Program guidelines and uses protective apparel and equipment as indicated.
