The Position

We're hiring a Mechanical Engineering Intern at the Port of Portland!

We believe in fostering the next generation of engineers by providing an immersive and dynamic learning environment. As a Mechanical Engineering Intern, you'll have the opportunity to work alongside experienced professionals, gain hands-on experience, and make a meaningful impact on our projects. This includes: providing support to Engineering staff, researching and preparing drawing references, utilizing Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) to assist Engineers, performing site visits to active construction sites, and reviewing construction documents including drawings and specifications!

To be considered for this intern position you must be a current student enrolled in a Portland Metro area school for the duration of employment. Spring 2025 graduates will not be eligible for this internship unless documentation of continued educational classes (graduate school documentation related to the field) can be provided at the time of application.

Duration: Expected sunset date on or around May 30, 2026, with full-time work during school breaks and part-time schedules during the school year.

Essential Job Duties

  • Under the direction of Engineering staff perform systems research, modeling, and field data acquisition in support of Port engineering design and maintenance programs.
  • Assist in the development and maintenance of system maintainable drawings. Tasks may include utilization of CAD and construction documentation software.
  • Support PDX Terminal Tenant improvement program, by assisting Port's engineers in performing their research, review and coordination support of the various Tenant space build out and improvements
  • Review drawing submissions from Port consultants, and research applicable supporting data to assist Port engineers in their review.

Minimum Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university in the Oregon/Washington area and seeking a degree in mechanical engineering.
  • Student must also provide current unofficial transcript at time of application.
  • Maintenance of a minimum 2.5 grade point average and continued enrollment in classes pertinent to the internship is required.
  • Must successfully pass and maintain clearance of a comprehensive Criminal History Records Check and a Security Threat Assessment for a PDX Security Badge, are required.
Demonstrated Knowledge and Skills
  • Demonstrate commitment to valuing differences among individuals and a passion for being inclusive.
  • Focus on safety improvements and comply with safety and health policies and procedures.
  • Show the utmost respect for others and act as a team player.
  • Basic understanding of mechanical engineering principals.
  • Comfortable with Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Excellent organization and time management skills.


Supplemental and Selection Information

SELECTION PROCESS (subject to change):

  1. A minimum qualification evaluation of education, training, and experience of submitted application packets will take place will take place by Human Resources the week of April 22, 2025.

  2. A Subject Matter Expert (SME) Panel will perform an evaluation of experience and training taken from your employment application materials including any responses to the supplemental questionnaire.

  3. Our goal is to schedule in-person panel interviews with candidates that successfully passed the SME evaluation as soon as possible. The successful candidate will be notified after interviews are complete with a tentative start date around May or June 2025, after final exams.
