Job Description

PURPOSE:

Under supervision, maintain, control, and calibrate all measuring and test equipment (M&TE) used to determine conformance to product quality requirements.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Perform calibration of M&TE in accordance with ANSI Geometric and Tolerancing Specifications and the Groton Calibration Manual.
  • Use standard inspection equipment and the coordinate measuring machine to perform calibration.
  • Make routine repairs of gauges and fixtures. Coordinate non-routine and specialized repair with the responsible engineer.
  • Maintain the Recall system using the tooling files on the main computer system. Accurate documentation of this system is required by both internal and external sources.
  • Issue weekly calibration reports to notify supervisors and engineers of overdue calibrations and calibrations coming due.
  • Work with supervisors and leads of all departments to plan the recall of M&TE around production demands.
  • Order new and replacement gauges and maintain a stock of the more commonly used gauges.
  • Establish an adequate vendor base and work with these vendors to design specialty gauges for unique applications.
  • Coordinate calibrations through third party vendors for calibrations that cannot be performed in-house. This will include communicating requirements with vendors, creating purchase requisitions, shipping parts, and reviewing vendor calibration certificates for accuracy.
  • Create fixture drawings for jobs which have missing fixture blueprints.
  • Assist the Layout department in performing first piece layout inspection and other miscellaneous duties of a layout inspector as required.
  • Support audits by presenting the calibration system including requested records and data to internal and external auditors in a professional manner.
  • Maintain tool and gauge area in a clean and orderly manner.

SPECIAL SKILLS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Familiarity with CMM inspection.
  • Proficient with various types of dimensional inspection equipment. This includes, but is not limited to dial calipers, micrometers, thickness gauges, height stands, and sine plates.
  • Must be able to perform the dimension inspection requirements of any equipment activated by the recall system.
  • Basic understanding of ANSI Y 14.5 M 1994 specification and the ability to read complex customer blueprints in addition to fixture blueprints.
  • Must have a basic understanding of shop math and be able to solve simple right angle trigonometric problems.
  • Must be comfortable with the use of computers for maintaining the recall system, recording data, and creating purchase requisitions.
  • Must be organized and able to keep track of a large number of gauges and tools.
  • Will have the ability to extract and/or create drawings using Solidworks.
  • Must possess the ability to evaluate and document inspection findings.
  • Use of judgment to plan and perform unusual and difficult work, including use of computerized databases, writing technical reports, creating drawings using Solidworks and evaluation of inspection findings.

REPORTING RELATIONSHIPS:

  • Reports directly to the QMS Supervisor.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • High school diploma
  • Trade school diploma preferred.
  • Minimum of three years of manufacturing experience including the use of various hand tools and gauges and an understanding of general industry requirements related to calibration and tool use.
