Research Program Associate Director

University of Wisconsin Madison
$116,426 ANNUAL (12 months)
sick time
United States, Wisconsin, Madison
21 North Park Street (Show on map)
Apr 11, 2025
Job Summary:

The University of Wisconsin-Madison Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology is a robust, growing academic department. Our research program includes Basic and Translational Science, Clinical, Population Health and Dissemination & Implementation Research . Our research portfolio is diverse and growing. In 2023-2024 ObGyn submitted 41 total grants requesting $42 million in federal funds and $10 million in non-federal funds. We have an increasing portfolio of federally funded and Industry sponsored Clinical Trials of 27 current trials (8 non-cancer & 19 cancer related trials), and have supported 41 clinical trials since 2015. The department has also seen a commensurate increase in extramural funds awarded since 2015. Funding received from all extramural sources increased by 164 percent, from $3.87 million to $6.35 million, and the bulk of that was an increase in federal funding. The department is committed to increase its funded grant portfolio by 10% each year.

In addition, our researchers are contributing to projects that are not administered through the department of ObGyn. We have built a multidisciplinary, cross-campus program in population health research focused on disparities in women's health and maternal and child health, leading to the launch of a Division of Reproductive and Population Health to help us understand and remedy the barriers to health equity in Wisconsin. The UW Collaborative for Reproductive Equity, funded by an anonymous donor, is a campuswide research initiative focused on critical needs in reproductive healthcare access and delivery, policy evaluation, and communication in Wisconsin and beyond.

We have built a robust and sustainable infrastructure to support the department's research portfolio. This effort began by conducting a thorough needs analysis to identify previous obstacles and barriers to conducting ObGyn research as well as to pinpoint the types of research our faculty are most interested in. Internal and external resources were identified that could be used to assist our faculty, such as the services offered through ICTR and the Health Sciences IRB. This exercise has led us to establish five research cores that are actively supporting research in the department- (a) Human Subjects Core which provides regulatory services, study administration and coordination, as well as Clinical Research Coordinators for subject recruitment and consenting. (b) Tissue Collection and Processing Core which supplies the department with Obstetrics and Gynecologic tissue cords and cord and blood samples and provides long-term banking for future research., (c) Data Management and Statistical Core which offers study design, data acquisition and management, and statistical expertise, (d) Sponsored projects Core to assist pre- and post-awards grants management, and (e) Training Grant Core which supports students, post-doctorates, and faculty on their path to becoming independent and accomplished researchers. We also established strong working relationships with key stakeholders and other SMPH departments with established clinical research offices to help us further expand our growing knowledge base.

This position serves at the direction of the Chief Administrative Officer and Vice Chairs of Clinical and Basic Research and has responsibility of supervising the Sponsored Projects and Financial Services Core, the Human Subjects Core, the Tissue Collections and Processing Core and the Data Analysis and Management Core, liaising closely with the Finance Associate Director and Finance team to advance the research mission. The position will also lead the effort of supporting trainees (residents, fellows, grad students, post docs, etc.) with their research.
