Grid Research & Development Advisor II

Starting Salary Range: $140,000 - $160,500 - position is also eligible for an annual bonus if individual performance and company objectives are met.

The Grid Research & Development (R&D) Advisor II combines energy-related engineering expertise with grid operations business acumen to assesses impacts of emerging grid technologies, perform engineering studies and pilots, and develop innovative solutions or prototypes to support reliable grid operations in the transitioning fleet.

As more Inverter Based Resources (IBRs), large loads, Distributed Energy Resources (DERs), emerging transmission technologies are added to the grid, the Advisor II collaborates with Operations business experts, external stakeholders, and research partners to gather information and track emerging issues, frame and deliver research and development projects to evolve and enable reliable grid operation functions including balancing, frequency and voltage stability, congestion management, real-time and forward reliability engineering studies, grid monitoring and communication, and advanced control room technologies.

As MISO's Grid Research and Development (R&D) Advisor II, you will:

• Keep current on new grid technologies like renewable energy sources, large loads, and transmission advancements. Identify potential impacts on operations and define research questions.
• Conduct studies and test new solutions to improve grid reliability in areas like balancing electricity supply, maintaining stability, managing congestion, and enhancing grid monitoring and control room technology.
• Use knowledge of energy management systems, power flow modeling, and stability analysis to conduct effective research.
• Analyze grid data to gain insights and help operators make informed decisions.
• Work across teams to translate research and innovation into business value.
• Contribute to project, team, and departmental planning including working with customers and partners to articulate hypothesized research outcomes and relative priority of activities.

To be successful as our Grid Research and Development (R&D) Advisor II you should have:

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, Power, or Energy related Engineering, Power Systems, Power Electronics or a related field (required)
• Master's or Ph.D. preferred
• At least 8 years of working experience in the energy industry required
• Experience in an applied research setting (e.g., academia, lab, industry research group), ideally undertaking electricity-focused research, preferred.
• Utilities, RTO/ISO, and Grid Operation experiences, preferred
• Comprehension of complex business scenarios; including the ability to define problems, collect & analyze data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
• Ability to develop, communicate, and coordinate project plans and projects.
• Skills and capabilities in at least three of the following areas:
  
  
  
  • Power flow analysis and dynamic modeling and simulation of bulk power grid
  • Distribution systems, microgrids, and distributed energy resources
  • Inverter Based Resources like solar photovoltaic systems, wind energy and battery energy storage systems, and other related systems
  • Energy Management System, Power System Engineering, Simulation and Modeling and associated tools
  • Development or application of advanced analytics, machine learning or similar methods
  • Electric utility resource procurement, electric transmission and/or generation development
  • Applied Research oriented and motivated
  
  
  
  

Appropriate level will be determined based upon experience and knowledge.
