Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit |
The Chancellor is vested with complete authority, subject to the direction of the President of the
UNC System. The Chancellor is responsible for carrying out policies of two governing boards: the
UNC System's Board of Governors and the University's Board of Trustees. It is also the responsibility of the Chancellor to make recommendations to the System President regarding academic program development, personnel matters (subject to policies of the Governors and Trustees), and budget development. The Chancellor maintains wide discretion in decision-making with regard to student affairs (subject to the policies of the governing boards) and other aspects of the administration of the University, as provided under the General Statutes of North Carolina and the
UNC Code. |
Position Summary |
This position serves as primary executive administrative support to the Chancellor of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The position is responsible for a broad variety of tasks to include triage, prioritization and coordination of the Chancellor's calendar, incoming phone calls, mail, travel and visitors to ensure that all matters are handled in a sensitive, organized, confidential and timely manner. The Assistant to the Chancellor must utilize a comprehensive knowledge of the University to ensure smooth communication and appropriate consultation between the Chancellor's Office and other University offices, and must be able to discern high priority or sensitive matters that may require the immediate and direct attention of the Chancellor, the Chief of Staff, or other University Senior Officers. The assistant also assists the Chancellor's Office business manager with financial transactions such as justification of the Chancellor's and Chief of Staff's
VISA statements, journal entries and check vouchers. The Chief of Staff and Chancellor's Assistant work in close collaboration to ensure that all requests for the Chancellor's time are handled in a timely manner and emergencies are given the priorities. The pace of the office requires that this person maintain composure under pressure; possess an exceptional ability to multi-task, as well as stay organized and detail oriented. |
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements |
Bachelor's degree and one year of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions. |
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Strong computer skills, particularly in Microsoft Office products, especially Outlook (email and calendaring), Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.
Ability to organize, prioritize, triage and otherwise manage work flows in a fast-paced office setting, often dealing with sensitive and critical issues.
Ability to manage multiple assigned projects, often under tight deadlines
Ability to communicate, orally and in writing, effectively, appropriately, and diplomatically with a wide-range of constituent contacts. Strong listening skills required. |
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience |
Experience in providing administrative support to one or more senior executives in a fast-paced, complex office setting.
Prior experience in an administrative capacity in a higher education and/or human resources setting. |

Campus Security Authority Responsibilities |
This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority in accordance with the Clery Act. This position will be required to report Clery crimes to the Clery Compliance Manager and complete annual training about reporting responsibilities. |
