The Morton Arboretum is a world-renowned nonprofit dedicated to protecting and growing trees locally and globally. We are seeking a dedicated carpenter aide to assist with the upkeep of Arboretum buildings and grounds. The ideal candidate will have a commitment to high-quality work, and be able to complete tasks both independently, and in coordination with other team members. You'll be part of an incredible team working together to thrive. Position Summary: Assist supervisor with the care of Arboretum facilities and structures to include painting, building maintenance, and carpentry work.


Essential Functions
:




  • Assist with a range of maintenance repair and renovation projects on a 1700 acre campus of a dozen buildings. Projects may involve some of the following tasks:




    • Paint and refinish structures and furniture.



    • Construct or repair such things as shelves, cabinets, bulletin boards, easels, tables, exhibit cases, counters, benches, partitions, floors, stairs, casings, bins, cribs, wood trim, dormers, and ventilators.



    • Maintain a variety of carpenter's hand-tools, portable and stationary power tools, and standard measuring instruments.



    • Fabricate and erect structures and displays for Arboretum special events, as needed.





  • Demonstrate alignment with the Arboretum's employee core values.



  • Other duties as assigned.





Qualifications
:
Current enrollment or in pursuit of a career in the trades preferred. Desire to gain hands-on experience in carpentry required. Previous painting experience preferred. Ability to operate small equipment and use hand tools required.

Ability to perform physical labor indoors and outdoors, requiring strength and endurance, in all kinds of weather. Ability to be flexible, self-motivated, neat, and safety-conscious in use of tools. Good communication skills.

  • Physical Demands: Requires significant amount of physical activity: limited lifting and carrying (up to 80 lbs. assisted), bending, climbing (up to 28 ft.), pushing, pulling, standing, walking, kneeling (1-3 hours), and traveling by vehicles. Sense of vision and hearing in the normal range with or without correction. Sense of touch and the ability to wear Personal Protective Equipment required.





  • Work Environment: Work is performed in a combined indoor and outdoor setting.



  • Equipment: Ladders and scaffolds, hand and power tools (portable and stationary), measuring instruments, painting supplies, utility cart, two-way radio.




The hiring rate for this position is $20.00/hour. This position is also eligible for a competitive benefits package.
