Lab Assistant/Phlebotomist (Per Diem, Rotating - Every Other Weekend) - Methodist

The Laboratory Assistant supports lab operations by processing and handling patient specimens for diagnostic testing in an accurate and timely manner and following established protocols. The Lab Assistant is responsible for receiving, centrifuging, storing, and transporting/distributing samples according to protocol in order to maintain sample integrity. The Lab Assistant provides customer service in all interactions with patients, physicians, and nursing personnel when providing instruction and assistance regarding laboratory testing results. In addition, will perform inpatient phlebotomy and collect blood specimens via venipuncture as required by the lab congruent with CLIA requirements.

Job Description

  • Interacts with co-workers, visitors, and other staff consistent with the values of Jefferson.

  • Cooperates with laboratory divisions and nursing personnel to ensure proper collection of adequate and appropriate specimens for testing. Communicates with Nursing Personnel when a patient refuses and uses hospital resources when language barriers exist.

  • Adheres to department policy involving the proper identification of a patient and proper labeling of blood samples.

  • Maintains orderly and timely flow of specimens to the technical departments in order to expedite the analysis of samples.

  • Review lab requisitions from physicians for accuracy, completeness, medical necessity, and the hospital's ability to perform tests and/or route specimens for testing.

  • Prepares specimens for analysis, including centrifuging, aliquoting, etc. Transports and stores specimens for future analysis.

  • Cleans and stocks work area and assists with maintenance of supplies

  • Follows all safety and Laboratory Dress code policies Performs other lab-related duties as assigned by supervisory personnel

  • Other lab assistance duties as assigned by the supervisor or manager, including the performance of phlebotomy and collection of blood specimens via venipuncture.

  • Perform inpatient phlebotomy and collect blood specimens via venipuncture.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent Experience: 1-2 years' previous laboratory experience preferred. Prior laboratory assistance and/or phlebotomy training required at certain laboratory locations. Phlebotomy certification preferred.
