Position Summary:
The Laboratory Manager of the MGH Cardiac Surgery Large Animal Laboratory is responsible for the comprehensive management of a dynamic research laboratory, including daily operations, regulatory compliance, and staff supervision. This position independently oversees the laboratory's technical, operational, and administrative activities, ensuring adherence to institutional, federal, and safety standards while supporting the Principal Investigator's research goals.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

*Oversee all day-to-day laboratory operations, including management of inventory, procurement, equipment maintenance, and scheduling of shared resources.

  • Serve as the primary regulatory liaison for the laboratory, ensuring timely submission, tracking, and compliance of IACUC, IRB, chemical safety, and biosafety protocols.
  • Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures to promote research integrity, laboratory efficiency, and regulatory compliance.
  • Coordinate and supervise experimental workflows to support multiple concurrent research projects.
  • Manage laboratory budgets in collaboration with the Principal Investigator, including monitoring expenses, initiating purchases, and ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Train, mentor, and supervise laboratory staff, including research technologists, interns, and visiting researchers; oversee onboarding and ongoing compliance training.
  • Organize and maintain comprehensive records of research activities, equipment logs, chemical inventories, and regulatory submissions.
  • Act as the central point of contact for all internal and external communications related to lab operations, including coordinating sample shipments, equipment service, and collaborative research activities.
  • Assist in the preparation of materials for grant applications, publications, presentations, and research progress reports.

*Monitor laboratory safety practices and ensure a safe, compliant work environment through regular inspections, training sessions, and incident reporting.

Skills and Competencies Required:

*Strong leadership skills and the ability to manage a multidisciplinary team.

  • Exceptional organizational and time management abilities.
  • Proficiency in laboratory information management systems, regulatory tracking tools, and institutional purchasing systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of laboratory safety regulations, animal care standards, and federal compliance requirements.
  • Ability to manage budgets and financial records efficiently.

*Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with a professional and collaborative approach to problem-solving.

Qualifications:

*Bachelor's degree in a scientific discipline

*Knowledge of large animal models, surgical research techniques, and regulatory requirements preferred.

Supervisory Responsibility:

*Supervise and manage laboratory staff, including research technologists, assistants, and interns.

*Oversee training programs, ensuring all laboratory personnel are compliant with institutional policies and regulatory standards.
