Church Pension Group (CPG) is a financial services organization that serves the Episcopal Church, located in Midtown Manhattan. CPG was founded in 1917 to provide pension benefits to eligible clergy of the Episcopal Church. Since then, its mission has expanded to include life and disability insurance, health benefits, property & casualty insurance, and publishing.
The Senior Manager Accounting leads transactional accounting primarily for the Management Company (CPGSC- Church Pension Group Services Corporation) and Benefits Companies (ECCEBT- The Episcopal Church Clergy and Employees' Benefit Trust and CPF- Church Pension Fund). Contributes as a "technical lead" for same Business Units, having a thorough knowledge of the organization's processes and having the skills to modify or develop new procedures to meet specialized needs. Performs advanced or specialized work that requires comprehensive knowledge of accounting theory and principles, and more than average seasoning.
This role has the responsibility of managing a senior accountant who supports the finance compliance and enterprise risk function which is outside of the scope of the Accounting team. While this role is not expected to be directly engaged in the activities of the compliance function it is expected, through partnership with the SVP Tax Management & Compliance and SVP, Internal Audit, to have an understanding of the work involved in order to effectively manage the timing of responsibilities for the Senior Accountant.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Directs the general accounting activities for the aforementioned Companies to comply with US GAAP, statutory financial accounting and tax reporting requirements, including financial statement presentation.
  • Leads and provides guidance to Senior Accountant and Accountants regarding policy, practice and approach to their responsibilities.
  • Responsible for ensuring the timely and accurate completion of monthly close including journal entries, account reconciliations to support general ledger balances and performing related account analysis.
  • Participates in and ensures the preparation of a variety of reports such as: cost reports, trial balances, balance sheets, profit-and-loss statements, etc., presenting information within established timeframes and ensuring compliance with statutory guidelines. Also develops nonstandard reports and statements when requested.
  • Contributes to developing, maintaining and enhancing policies, procedures and controls.
  • Assists with internal and external audit requests.
  • Collaborates with Finance team to create a smooth and efficient end-to-end flow of information by establishing and maintaining customer service levels between Finance & Accounting, periodically measuring and addressing results. Evaluates and identifies opportunities to improve the quality and level of customer service. Ensures issues identified during financial analysis are understood and corrected within future accounting periods.
  • Liaise with business partners for purpose of supplying or explaining information and to align interdependent processes, resolve problems and coordinate audit requests or other reporting needs.
  • Participates in special assignments, projects and taskforces assigned to the area; providing assistance to others when requested and informing the department's management of progress and/or problems.

  • Proven track record of process change management to improve its efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Experience of Oracle Financials or similar accounting software.
  • Experience preparing compliance filings related to benefit and management company entities.
  • Strong leadership, supervisory and teamwork skills; including direct supervisory experience.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, orally and in writing.
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
  • BA\B.S in Finance or Accounting
  • Advanced degree or CPA preferred but not necessary
  • 7+ years in accounting positions. Thoroughly experienced in all aspects of accounting in Insurance or similar industry.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Commuting to the office, on average, three days a week. Extensive use of a computer keyboard is a demand of the position to perform the essential functions of this job successfully. WORK ENVIRONMENT: Currently Hybrid (two days working from home, three days working in a standard office environment, Tue-Thurs.). Salary Range: $107,000 - $135,000
