Job Summary

The Caltech Seismo Lab seeks a fulltime term staff member to participate in the operation of the Caltech/USGS Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) as part of the seismic data analysis team. The primary duty is routine analysis of earthquake data using graphics-based software tools. There may also be opportunities to assist with large magnitude earthquake response and/or social media engagement. We are interested in individuals with some computer skills who like hands-on work in a dynamic environment and who can work well alone and as part of a small team.

Essential Job Duties
  • Analyze seismic data from the SCSN using standard software tools and procedures, including a graphical interface on a Windows or Mac computer.
  • Participate in monitoring the state of health of seismic stations, including troubleshooting various aspects of the data acquisition process and working with SCSN real-time operators to ensure completeness of the data archive.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned, including varied technical assignments requiring the use of standard scientific principles, techniques, and processes.
  • Experienced analysts may participate as a duty seismologist with responsibilities for large magnitude earthquake response.
Basic Qualifications
  • Associate degree in science or engineering, or equivalent with at least one year of work experience required.
  • Basic computer hardware and software skills, including use of Windows and/or Mac OS.
  • Ability to use graphics-based scientific software on a computer for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to work with a team and individually.
  • Ability to pay attention to detail.
  • Excellent communication skills and a high level of initiative are required.
Preferred Qualifications
  • B.S. degree in science or engineering preferred.
  • Experience using interactive graphical user interfaces for analyzing and reviewing data, a plus.
  • Experience in analysis of seismic or other geophysical data, a plus.

Hiring Range

$25.50 to $31.75 per hour

The salary of the finalist(s) selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, internal equity, experience, education, specialty and training.
