Job Summary The Caltech Seismo Lab seeks a fulltime term staff member to participate in the operation of the Caltech/USGS Southern California Seismic Network (SCSN) as part of the seismic data analysis team. The primary duty is routine analysis of earthquake data using graphics-based software tools. There may also be opportunities to assist with large magnitude earthquake response and/or social media engagement. We are interested in individuals with some computer skills who like hands-on work in a dynamic environment and who can work well alone and as part of a small team. Essential Job Duties Analyze seismic data from the SCSN using standard software tools and procedures, including a graphical interface on a Windows or Mac computer. Participate in monitoring the state of health of seismic stations, including troubleshooting various aspects of the data acquisition process and working with SCSN real-time operators to ensure completeness of the data archive. Perform all other duties as assigned, including varied technical assignments requiring the use of standard scientific principles, techniques, and processes. Experienced analysts may participate as a duty seismologist with responsibilities for large magnitude earthquake response. Basic Qualifications Associate degree in science or engineering, or equivalent with at least one year of work experience required. Basic computer hardware and software skills, including use of Windows and/or Mac OS. Ability to use graphics-based scientific software on a computer for long periods of time. Must be able to work with a team and individually. Ability to pay attention to detail. Excellent communication skills and a high level of initiative are required. Preferred Qualifications B.S. degree in science or engineering preferred. Experience using interactive graphical user interfaces for analyzing and reviewing data, a plus. Experience in analysis of seismic or other geophysical data, a plus.
