As a Library Materials Selector, you play a key role in curating our diverse and dynamic popular materials collection. Your enthusiasm for new books, music, and visual media is partnered with circulation statistics and vendor parameters to make data-informed purchasing decisions. You will collaborate with other administrative and branch staff on collection projects and maintenance, including weeding, and you identify community-specific collection trends and needs. Your self-motivation, attention to detail, and strong communication skills are essential to selecting and maintaining a high-quality, high-circulating collection.

We Require

  • One year of experience with collection development (e.g., selecting and weeding print, media, or e-resources, and conducting research to determine collection needs)

  • Master's degree in Library Science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school

We Also Value

  • Professional library experience, which includes direct customer service

  • Public library experience

  • Intermediate proficiency in Microsoft Excel

Job Contributions

  • Selects and orders library materials in assigned areas - print, media, and e-resources in English and other languages

  • Communicates and regularly collaborates with the branches, contracted vendors, the Collection Management Team, and the Collection Administrator

  • Monitors budget expenditure and forecasts monthly purchasing needs

  • Reads title reviews, maintains familiarity with "hot" titles, and conducts research to determine collection needs and support selection duties

  • Drives to branches to perform collection tasks, including weeding, shifting, staff training, or assisting with Opening Day Collections

  • Compiles and reports required statistics

  • Performs database maintenance on MARC records to improve metadata

Working conditions

  • Approximately 90-95% of one's workday is spent seated in front of a computer, position is typically office or administrative work, and is not substantially exposed to adverse environmental conditions

  • Position is eligible for hybrid flexibility after a brief training period

  • Will be required to travel occasionally to all branch locations throughout Maricopa County

  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds occasionally or negligible weights frequently; sitting most of the time
