Your Responsibilities as a Scientist 2:



  • Work under general supervision and direction to execute varied environmental consulting projects and tasks, including but not limited to due diligence, site investigation, remediation, pilot tests, feasibility studies, hazardous waste compliance/inspections, permitting, and related consulting services.
  • Primary or contributing author for proposals, cost estimates, work plans, client and regulator correspondence, and work completion reports. Deliverables to be professional, complete, and "client-ready" prior to submitting for peer or management QA/QC review.
  • Work with significant independence on daily/routine assignments, while maintaining strong collaboration and communication with clients, regulators, and Apex Junior and Senior Staff & Managers.
  • About 70% office / 30% field duties. Field assignments will be mostly, but not exclusively, in Southern California.
  • Wide range of field duties including but not limited to scoping meetings; site reconnaissance; client and regulator meetings; investigation/remediation kick-off; underground utility clearance/mark-out; soil, soil gas, groundwater, and indoor air sampling; oversight of drillers, other subcontractors, and junior field staff; and preparation of detailed boring/well logs.
  • Office duties include, but are not limited to preparing detailed, insightful proposals, cost estimates, work/sampling/safety plans; timely work-performed reports; managing and monitoring project budget, schedule, and adherence to scope; proactive identification of problems/concerns requiring discussion with client or regulator; prompt, accurate project billing; and tracking and following up on accounts receivable.
  • Active leadership role in Apex's continued success and growth in Southern California including but not limited to collaborating with and leverage Apex's large and diverse national, regional, and southern California managers, senior technical staff, and business development professionals to sustain existing and develop new client relationships.
  • Actively maintain professional geologist (PG) accreditation, while continuing to leverage opportunities for cross-training and continuing education to support your career growth.
  • Maintain 85% utilization over the course of the year.

What we're looking for:



  • BS in Geology, Hydrogeology, Civil/Environmental/Chemical Engineering, or related discipline. Master's degree is preferred.
  • CaliforniaPG or California PE certification and 40-hour HAZWOPER certification required.
  • 8-10 years of successful environmental consulting experience including environmental due diligence, site assessment, and remediation projects.
  • Experience with diverse clients and sites, including oil & gas, manufacturing, utilities, landfills, chlorinated solvent sites, Potentially Responsible Parties (PRP) Groups, and municipalities.
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills, ability to mentor and train staff, and a good record and understanding of safe work practices.
