Position Overview
The Gallery Specialist supervises students & volunteers and works with faculty and staff to coordinate the technical and operational aspects of the Art Gallery. The position develops programming that demonstrates innovation and service excellence through community outreach and marketing, for participants including students, visiting artists, and the general public.
Job Description
- 50% - Gallery Management: Work in cooperation with the Visual Art Department Chair to coordinate and direct Art Gallery exhibition calendar, program administration, support special events, and curriculum-supplementing workshops; develop instruction, exhibit management, digital media, and specialized installations on a case-by-case basis; coordinate and direct exhibitions and workshops related to the exhibition space. Supervise part-time staff as a lead worker, schedule, assign workloads, oversee projects, review, and assess work assigned; provide specialized hands-on training to part-time technical staff, volunteers,
- 20% - Administrative: Manage operational planning, administer, and monitor the budget, order and maintain supplies, manage technical and specialized gallery equipment, arrange maintenance and repairs for the building.
- 15% - Marketing: Design, produce, distribute all marketing for the Art Gallery exhibitions and events. Physical marketing: press releases, postcards, flyers, placed printed advertisements. Digital marketing: web and social media content. Manage activities, written copy, and images for the art website, art gallery page.
- 15% - Property control: Develop and administer policies and procedures for gallery management, scheduling, conducting, and managing open calls for artwork, create and oversee contracts for incoming artwork, control inventory, install exhibitions.
Position Requirements
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed for special events
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in education, organizational development or directly related field (directly related field includes a degree in Art, Museum Studies, Art Education, or Art History).
- One year experience with museum or gallery-quality exhibit design, installation, lighting, signage, assembly and/or storage.
Preferred Qualifications
- Previous experience that required leading volunteers, student employees, and/or other staff, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience with inventory, care, control, techniques, and requirements as it pertains to the permanent art collection, incoming and outgoing artwork, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience that required managing operations in an art gallery and/or coordinating special events, as evidenced by application materials.
- Previous experience working with digital media, art, and equipment, as evidenced by application materials.
