Job Overview

Processing Archivist, Archives & Rare Books Library:

Staff position responsible for appraising, accessioning new collections, and processing (arrangement and description) of archival and manuscript collections to ensure their long-term care and discoverability. Additionally, the archivist works to create online finding aids in a collection management system, supervise student assistants, and assist in collaborative prioritization of processing projects.

Receives general direction from and reports to the head of the Archives & Rare Books Library (ARB).

Essential Functions

  • Appraises and creates preliminary container lists for new collections; accessions collections into ArchivesSpace.
  • Arranges, describes, and preserves archival collections in all formats to facilitate discovery and access.
  • Assists departmental staff in maintenance of processing manuals, workflows identification, and collection documentation.
  • Creates, updates, and publishes finding aids in ArchivesSpace.
  • Assists in project planning for prioritization of collections, including conducting collection surveys.
  • In consultation with department head, assists in identification of materials for transfer to the Preservation Lab for treatment.
  • Assists in remediation of legacy finding aids and catalog records.
  • Supervises student assistants working on processing projects as needed.
  • Promotes newly processed collections through blog posts and social media.
  • Provides oral and written reports as directed.
  • Participate in appropriate meetings, committees and organizations related to the duties and responsibilities of the department, and in support of UC Libraries programs and organizations.

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree in Library Sciences with an archives concentration

Required Trainings/Certifications
Required Experience

One (1) year of processing experience with demonstrated ability to independently process records consistent with current archival best practices

Comfortable with a wide range of computer applications

Additional Qualifications Considered

  • Additional graduate degree in a related field.
  • Reading knowledge in a language other than English, preferably German.
  • Interest in or knowledge of processing and preservation of born-digital materials
  • Interest in enhancing discoverability of collections reflecting marginalized communities.
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Supervisory experience in the hiring, training, and appraisal of the work of student employees.
