Job Objective

The Director of Philanthropy leads the major gifts staff and serves on the development department's leadership team. This individual maintains a portfolio of top donors and prospective donors and manages the major gift staff in achieving funding goals associated with their portfolios of major individual, corporate and foundation donors and donor prospects who give $5,000 and more annually. The majority of this team's funding goals are associated with the Greater St. Louis region. This position is expected to advance and support the Mission of The Salvation Army.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:



  1. Responsible for implementing the moves management donor relationship process that identifies, qualifies and cultivates prospects who will be solicited for major and planned gifts.
  2. Sets activity and fundraising goals along with managing the top 50 donors.
  3. Responsible for the development of major giving societies such as the William Booth Society.
  4. Responsible for supervising all major gift staff who maintain qualified portfolios.
  5. Promotes collaboration among Major and Planned Giving staff.
  6. Responsible for annual revenue budget for the major gifts department and manages team expense budget.
  7. Supports and manages administrative and logistical functions of the fundraising team to include interaction with fundraising and community outreach events as assigned by the EDD.
  8. Works with colleagues to ensure collaboration between direct mail, marketing, social media, and communication team members which ensure optimal integrated strategies in regard to major giving and planned giving donor communications and other initiatives.
  9. Works closely with staff members who help recruit and/or manage volunteers to create meaningful engagement opportunities for individuals.
  10. Works in close collaboration with local officers, program, finance and fundraising staff to present local Army resource development needs that correspond to where donors and prospects reside, while always being responsive to each donor's interests (even if elsewhere) and attentive to fiduciary responsibilities (donor intent with gifts).
  11. Engages donors in volunteer opportunities, events and other related TSA activities.
  12. Participates in recommended professional trainings as budget allows, conference calls with other major gifts staff and other professional development opportunities.
  13. Maintains accurate donor files, tracking spreadsheets, correspondence and gift acknowledgments, etc., in keeping with department policies and procedures.
  14. This role will be required to participate in TSA functions and events that occur outside of normal working hours to include weekends and holidays.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications




  • Related bachelor's degree and ten or more years of work experience.
  • Combination of training and/or experience considered.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to take direction, manage multiple tasks and possess good organizational/time management skills.
  • Experience using a donor database, Microsoft Office Suite, and donor qualification software.
  • A decision-making approach that evaluates options, resources and outcomes in light of the donor and departmental goals and objectives.
  • A communication and management style that exhibits the principles and values of the Army, as well as fosters team relationships and effectively communicates information.
  • An interpersonal style that builds significant relationships with both current and potential donors.
  • Advanced degree and/or CFRE credentials are preferred.


  • Willingness to travel throughout the Midland Division as needed.
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends as needed.
  • Requires valid drivers' license, reliable transportation, and pass TSA MVR check.


Physical and Working Conditions

Must be capable of performing the above essential duties in an office environment to include using a computer, answering phones, etc. Most work will be indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. However, some work will be done outdoors which will be hot in the summer and cold in the winter.
