Job Duties
This position is responsible for day-to-day oversight and organization of the nursing staff within the Student Health Service to ensure adequate staffing, cleanliness, quality care and efficient patient flow through the health service. The position is responsible for problem and conflict solving at both the patient and employee level. This position directly supervises 12-14 Registered Nurses, 2-3 Nursing Assistants and 1-2 Certified Medical Assistants. This position works closely with, and reports to, the Associate Director for Clinical Operation, in overseeing clinical activities that effect patient flow and quality. This position is responsible for the immediate clinical environment and assures that the Student Health staff is prepared with adequate supplies and proper functioning equipment.

This position is charged with the provision of administrative and nursing duties of the Student Health Center. This involves initiation of communication and coordination in problem solving, and implementation of changes among health care providers, nursing staff, and other support staff. The position will develop, implement, and evaluate the nursing care to be provided to the students at ECU and will be accountable for the quality and efficiency of nursing care at the Student Health Center. The nursing supervisor is expected to maintain a presence in the nursing daily schedule, taking patient assignments and rotations as often as time permits; administrative time will also be allotted to ensure completion of non-patient care duties. Work Schedule: Regular work hours are primarily 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday, The nature of work for this position varies and hours are adjusted to meet perceived needs. These hours may vary temporarily if an emergent situation requiring staffing changes develops.

Administrative Duties (20%)

  • Provide feedback to the Associate Director for Clinical Operations on day-to-day activities and problem-solving activities.
  • Clearly communicate professional expectations to staff.
  • Maintain awareness of interdepartmental relationships and communication problems.
  • Follow organization policies and procedures.
  • Actively confront unprofessional behavior and compliment good behavior.
  • Supervise assigned personnel in the work area during working hours.
  • Provide professional role model for peers, students, and other health care personnel.
  • Attend and actively participate in assigned committees.
  • Coordinate and encourage a harmonious working atmosphere throughout Student Health.
  • Review issues related to quality control for the nursing department would include survey results, comments and complaints, incident reports, etc.
  • Participate in annual policy review.
  • Assist with accreditation preparation as needed.
  • Manage daily nursing functions.
  • Write policies and procedures for the nursing department.
  • Identify training needs.
  • Attend in-house educational programs and local and regional continuing educational programs that are relevant to work.
  • Seek out opportunities for continuing education for the nursing staff that is relevant to work.
  • Participate in planning and presenting information related to SHS at campus events including freshmen and graduate student orientations, and other events as needed.
  • Responsible for the availability of medical supplies at SHS.


Scheduling and Work Records (15%)

  • Develop the nursing schedule for SHS within the regulations of the Federal Wage and Hour Law and the State Personnel Act.
  • Reviewing and approving time records for the nursing staff.
  • Receive leave request from assigned staff, review schedule and grant leave time if coverage can be maintained.
  • Utilize the assigned unit staff to promote efficiency of patient flow through individual unit.
  • Communicate and initiate changes in unit assignment as provider changes, and absences alter staffing needs.
  • Make daily assignments for the nurses and nursing assistants on the unit.
  • Prepare downtime nursing assignments and schedules.
  • Allocate staff for outreach activities, such as flu vaccine clinics.

Annual Evaluations/Job Descriptions (15%)

  • Work in collaboration with the Associate Director for Clinical Operations to develop job descriptions for staff nurses and nursing assistants.
  • Revise job descriptions on an annual basis and set expectations for the coming year.
  • Initiate the annual evaluation of assigned employees and review with Associate Director for Clinical Operations before giving formal evaluations.
  • Make recommendations for pay increases for staff.
  • Self-evaluation and evaluation of coaching strategies will be accomplished through the evaluation of staff performance and the meeting of the unit goals and objectives.
  • Deal with personnel issues with assigned departments to include performance evaluation, coaching, and disciplinary action, following guidelines set forth by the Office of State Personnel and ECU Department of People Operations, Success, and Opportunity.
  • Deal with conflicts between departments as above and resolve conflicts with the most positive outcome positive.
  • Conduct nursing competencies.
  • Coordinate nursing peer review.
  • Conduct probationary, interim, and final evaluation for nursing staff.

Orientation of Staff (10%)

  • Evaluate the orientation process and offer suggestion of improvement.
  • Initiate and be responsible for the orientation process of nursing staff

Equipment, Supplies, Inventory (5%)

  • Check emergency equipment daily to assure proper performance.
  • Develop and coordinate with supply nurse a mechanism to assess supply needs in the assigned area and ensure an adequate amount of supplies for patient care are readily available in the area.
  • Assign a nursing staff member to act as Equipment Manager, according to policy.
  • Assign cleaning duties and stocking assignments to the nursing staff.
  • Maintain/reorder gas tanks, including oxygen, nitrous, and CO2.
  • Ensure laundry deliveries are sufficient for clinic needs

Staff Development (5%)

  • Encourage attendance of staff development programs, division events, and campus well-being initiatives
  • Assess development needs of assigned registered nurses and nursing assistants.

Nursing Duties (30%)

  • Providing high quality nursing care to patients of SHS and be a resource to other nursing staff. This includes competence in patient assessment, vital signs, clinical skills, physical assessment, patient education, nursing triage.
  • Demonstrated ability to rotate between nursing areas as needed, including clinic, Triage, phone triage, Nurse Access Clinic, sexual assault nursing services, health sciences location and others as necessary.
  • Competent medication administration, including vaccines and other injectables.
  • Collaboration with provider staff when evaluating patient needs.
  • Critical thinking, especially in emergencies or complex situations.
  • Set up for procedures and exams, chaperoning sensitive exams, and assisting with procedures
  • Proper cleaning/disinfection of instruments and equipment, including use of sterilization equipment
  • Concise and accurate documentation of patient encounters
  • Participate in nursing outreach activities
  • Participate in the staffing rotation, including late coverage, when not attending to administrative duties

Minimum Education/Experience

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina
  • Two years of nursing experience

License or Certification Required by Statute or Regulation

  • Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina


Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing or bachelor's degree in a related field;
  • 3-5 years of nursing leadership experience
