Job Duties |
The Registered nurse performs professional duties through assessment, planning, implementation of evaluation, education and counseling of patients in accordance with the North Carolina Nurse Practice Act,
ANA College Health Nursing Practice Standards,
SHS guidelines of Nursing Care,
SHS Policies and Procedures, provider's orders, and instructions form the nursing supervisor and/or Associate Director of Clinical Operations.
Accuracy required in work, precision, exactness, and accuracy is required in providing patient care and in communicating with staff. This is essential to ensure that proper care is rendered to patients during their visit at Student Health Service.
Direct Nursing Care (80%)
- Providing high quality nursing care to patients of SHS. This includes competence in patient assessment, vital signs, clinical skills, physical assessment, patient education, nursing triage.
- Rotate between nursing areas as needed, including clinic, Triage, phone triage, Nurse Access Clinic, sexual assault nursing services, health sciences location and others as necessary.
- Medication administration, including vaccines and other injectables.
- Collaboration with provider staff when evaluating patient needs.
- Critical thinking, especially in emergencies or complex situations.
- Set up for procedures and exams, chaperoning sensitive exams, and assisting with procedures
- Proper cleaning/disinfection of instruments and equipment, including use of sterilization equipment
- Concise and accurate documentation of patient encounters
- Participate in nursing outreach activities
- Participate in the late nurse rotation
- Other duties as assigned as a member of the SHS Clinical Staff.
Tracking Nurse Duties (20%)
- Reporting of communicable diseases, dog bites, and other reportable issues to public health authorities
- Ensuring follow up of abnormal lab results or provider requests for follow up
- Maintaining applicable SHS reports
- Compiling data for clinical studies as requested or annual ACHA benchmarking reports
- Coordinating post exposure tracking for blood borne exposures for clinical students

Minimum Education/Experience |
Licensed to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of North Carolina.
