About the Job

The Assistant Director of Event Operations serves as a member of the Facilities & Event Operations unit for the Department of Athletics to support the department's mission, vision, and values. This position will be responsible for successfully planning and executing select athletic events and rentals, while working within a creative team environment that embraces change and encourages innovation.

Detailed duties for this position include:

40% - Serve as on-site manager for events, coordinating logistics for teams and game officials, staff, set-up, and crowd control supervision. Collaborate with partners of the Athletics department, campus community, and city agencies to successfully plan, execute, and evaluate events.

20% - Provide excellent customer service fans and guests. Assist with the day-to-day operations of the event management unit including budget preparation and reconciliation, develop event management manuals, assign staff and establish game-day protocols to ensure compliance with department, University, Big Ten, WCHA, and NCAA rules and regulations.

30% - Manage the department's event staff/game crew programs. Responsibilities include hiring, goal setting, ongoing coaching and feedback and performance reviews. Serve as department liaison to campus partners like UMPD/UMEMS and Event Services.

10% - Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Sports Management or related field plus at least two years of experience or a combination of related education and work experience to equal at least six years.
  • 2 years of experience in college athletics or with event management related responsibilities
  • Understanding and commitment to working effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds to support an inclusive and welcoming environment.
  • Ability to build strong relationships across various departments
  • Strong written and oral communication skills
  • Effective time management and organizational skills as well as attention to detail
  • Ability to self-motivate, work in fast-paced environments, adapt to change, and work on multiple projects
  • Must be able and willing to work nights, weekends, and some holidays frequently
  • Strong computer literacy in Windows, Excel, Word, and Publisher as well as internet functions

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Sports Management or related field
  • Experience serving as the primary point of contact for Division I sporting events
  • Knowledge of staffing software
  • Knowledge of scheduling software
  • Knowledge of NCAA, Big Ten, and WCHA policies

Pay and Benefits

Pay: $24.03 hourly plus overtime

Time Appointment Category: 75%-100% Appointment (If job description above does not specify appointment or expected weekly hours, assume a 100% appointment.)
