Position Summary
This incumbent is a highly complex medical illustrator position in a fast-paced highly technology intensive department. The person in this position will have three primary responsibilities. The primary responsibility is to create anatomical, pathological, and surgical illustrations, 3-D models and animations, and other media that can be used to communicate biomedical concepts within veterinary and undergraduate science curricula. This includes creating 3-D models and animations that can be incorporated directly into eLC and programs such as Unity3D, Unreal, and Hype, with the end result being standalone interactive modules for students to use in traditional or online courses. This involves a strong knowledge of science, anatomy, and physiology, typically obtained by completion of MS-level training at one of the five accredited medical illustration training programs in North America, post-graduate experience in this type of work, and the use of specialized software that allows the production of interactive educational materials. The production of these materials involves excellent artistic skills and knowledge of graphic presentation techniques.

The second responsibility will be to produce diagrams, logos, scientific posters and brochures for use by faculty members and departments within the university.

The third responsibility will be to share the task of printing large format scientific posters submitted by students and faculty members to the unit.
This position is guaranteed for 1 year with the possibility of extension based on funding.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies

  • Proficiency in current and emerging technologies and specialized software used to create illustrations, 3-D models, animations, and present these to scientific audiences. Examples of software used on a regular basis by the person in this position include Cinema4D, Maya, Unity3D, Unreal, ZBrush, Photoshop, iBooks Author, and After Effects.
  • Knowledge of anatomy, pathology and surgery and the major branches of the medical sciences is essential.
  • Effective graphics arts skills, and the ability to produce both digital and printed materials that are aesthetically pleasing and educational. Ability to develop and incorporate interactive media into educational materials that can be used either in classrooms or online educational courses.
  • Ability to portray accurately and in detail medical subjects for display or reproduction.
  • Excellent organizational and analytical skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize work flow while providing excellent work under tight deadlines.

  • Research and create 2D & 3D medical illustrations (i.e. scientific, surgical, anatomical, physiological, histological, etc.) for various modes of communication including print, projection, and digital media. This include storyboarding, script editing, research, rendering, animating graphics, and digital editing of animations for a variety of presentation devices and formats (Mac/PC, iPad, Android).
  • Assist clients in tailoring visual messages to facilitate clear communication with their target audience.
  • Advise clients as to the best method and media for communicating within their budget and time frame.

  • Incorporate emerging technologies into the development of interactive educational materials for use in classrooms or online courses. This includes researching the latest software programs that can be used to educational modules designed to maximize interactivity, realism and student engagement. Examples of these programs include Hype, Unity3D and Unreal that allow the production of engaging experiences.

  • Design newsletters, logos, and other materials for publication. This includes participating in the design and generation of publications such as recurring newsletters, the VMES Annual Report, ePubs, and Apple Books.
  • Work with other personnel in Educational Resources to design, produce, and deliver posters, fliers, and logos for programs within the College and University.

  • Share in the responsibility for printing of large-format scientific posters Educational Resources large-format printer, help identify when supplies need to be ordered, and pass this information along to the Director. This includes being available on a rotating basis to evaluate in-coming requests for this service, printing the posters in a timely manner, and ensuring that information needed to create the resulting invoices for services is obtained from the clients.

  • Meet with the Director and other personnel in Educational Resources at regular intervals to schedule the production of incoming projects.
  • Define incoming projects by noting the client's objectives, type of media, number of illustrations or animation sequences, and estimated completion time for each phase of production.
