Job Announcement

Since 1977, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) has served the Fairfax County community by enhancing mobility, safety, and the quality of life of residents, businesses, and visitors through planning, coordinating, funding, implementing, and sustaining a multimodal transportation system. FCDOT is seeking an innovative, motivated, and qualified engineering technician to join the Active Transportation Team, primarily responsible for the active transportation signage program. This position will also support the Active Transportation Team's efforts to plan, evaluate, and promote active transportation capital improvements and amenities in urban, suburban, and rural areas, as well as support inclusive and encouraging educational initiatives and programming. In a dynamic and quickly evolving environment, this position will provide a rewarding experience for an individual invested in achieving the county's active transportation goals.

Responsibilities include:

  • Conducting field reviews to collect transportation data, such as road measurements, traffic and bicycle/pedestrian/scooter counts, and location and condition of approximately 3,000 signs
  • Determining locations for new signs, preparing signage graphics and work orders, and overseeing sign installation/maintenance
  • Conducting annual countywide sign inventory and inspection, ensuring existing signs meet Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) requirements
  • Updating databases and GIS maps, as required
  • Assisting in community outreach such as education/safety activities and events within the Active Transportation Team including preparing materials
  • Providing administrative and technical support to the Active Transportation Team such as report and document distribution, research, GIS database updates, meeting coordination, bike locker support, bicycle and pedestrian counter support, and crosswalk study support
  • Providing customer service, which may include documenting and responding to community inquiries and requests
  • Attending off-site meetings and site visits which may require the operation of a personal vehicle and/or county vehicle
  • Performing other duties as assigned

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following:

High school graduation or a GED issued by a state department of education; plus, three years of engineering technical support work.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Valid driver's license
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Working knowledge of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), other FHWA publications, and county and state regulations on traffic signs and markings.
  • Experience using geographic information system (GIS) software to interpret, document and share information.
  • Experience planning and executing field reviews to collect transportation data and the ability to process information by compiling, categorizing, calculating, or verifying information and data accurately to document field notes.
  • Experience in transportation planning or design.
  • At least one year of experience utilizing transportation related software programs.
  • Ability to review and interpret technical documents such as maps and plans, and update and maintain accurate databases and GIS maps.
  • Ability to use relevant information and judgment to evaluate whether plans, specifications, permits, or inspection results are in compliance with standards and specifications.
  • Experience preparing accurate quantity estimates, graphics, cost estimates and work orders.
  • Experience providing customer service responding to complaints and provide technical explanations.
  • Ability to work independently, to set individual priorities, to manage time effectively, to have attention to detail, and to apply consistently sound judgement.
  • Good written and oral communication skills, as well as experience in community outreach, including coordinating and preparing safety/education activities and events.
  • Good interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Possess transportation/engineering related license/certification such as: Esri Technical certification, Engineer in Training (EIT), or Engineer Intern (EI).
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to stand, stoop, bend, stretch, walk, climb, sit, kneel, crouch, reach, crawl, lift and handle materials with manual dexterity. Ability to lift up to 25 lbs. Ability to input, access, and retrieve information from a computer. Visual acuity to review detailed drawings, plans and documents. Ability to operate a motor vehicle. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
