Role Summary

We treat factories as innovative products, not copying machines. You will lead the ideation, design and execution of Plastics equipment & technologies, enabling Rivian to launch products smarter, faster and more sustainably than ever before. This vast scope starts with collaborating with product design to optimize manufacturability and ends with delivering injection molding technology and automation systems that challenge the status quo. This opening will be located at either our Normal, IL or Plymouth, MI facilities and reports directly to the Plastics Manufacturing Engineering Manager.


Responsibilities

  • Specification, design, and installation management of plastics equipment projects including injection molding machines, mold change systems, resin distribution systems, robots, and auxiliary equipment to grow production capacity in line with corporate goals.
  • Specification, design, and installation management of plastics assembly equipment projects including assembly stations, plastics welding / joining equipment, packaging/racking, and integration with Rivian's MES system.
  • Ensure achievement of safety, quality, cost, timing & throughput targets on all projects.
  • Provide regular, metric-based project updates to the management team.
  • Understand and follow company and industry standards and best practices in project implementation.
  • Develop plastics equipment and processing standards to be followed in all Rivian manufacturing facilities.
  • Partner with tooling and production engineers to develop injection molding processes on home line.
  • Provide engineering support for continuous improvement activities in plastics production facilities including SMED, equipment uptime, scrap reduction, weight reduction, cycle time reduction, etc.
  • Provide sustainability solutions for use of regrind and reuse of refuse plastics from other areas of the manufacturing facility.
  • Work with Dimensional and Quality Teams to evaluate measurement data and evaluate process corrections to achieve dimensional and visual quality targets
  • Challenge assumptions that are not backed up by a thorough engineering evaluation.
  • Be part of a world-class engineering team, with a focus on high quality work and rapid project deployment.
  • Define manufacturing technologies & strategies for current and future plants, with the goal of maximizing space utilization and manufacturing efficiency
  • End-to-end ownership of equipment introduction, covering all milestones from RFQ, SOW, design, fabrication, FAT, installation, commissioning, SAT to finally ramp
  • Support vendor selection and negotiations to optimize financial spending
  • Support equipment needs in all Rivian prototyping and mass production facilities
  • Ensure effective handover of new equipment to operations and sustaining teams
  • Actively engaged in value engineering, challenge assumptions and break the status quo

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or similar technical field.
  • 5 years of experience in a plastics engineering role.
  • Operational and functional knowledge of injection molding equipment, robotics, and auxiliary equipment
  • Knowledge of the equipment and process requirements of various injection molding resins such as TPO, PP, ABS
  • Experience developing equipment and procurement specifications for purchase of plastics equipment.
  • Knowledgeable in high and low volume manufacturing skills and concepts (cycle time analysis, quality control, equipment efficiency, equipment selection, return on investment, etc.).
  • Demonstrated ability to solve complex technical problems and see the solution implemented to a high level of accuracy & quality.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with cross functional teams
  • Will be called upon to lead and instruct other manufacturing engineers on major projects across several cross functional disciplines.
  • Will be responsible for reporting out status of projects to senior management on a regular basis.
  • Exceptional verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to travel to Rivian manufacturing sites for extended periods of time during tooling and equipment installation and launch.
  • Hands on approach to problem solving.
  • Experience working within 2D & 3D CAD environments and various engineering tools

Pay Disclosure

Salary range rate for Illinois and Michigan based applicants: $98,500-$123,000 (actual compensation will be determined based on experience, location, and other factors permitted by law).
