About the Team

The Social Products team explores how to redesign familiar social products using the intelligence of our models to solve their problems. We envision going back to a world where social media is a positive force.

About the Role

As a Full-Stack Software Engineer on the Social Products team, you'll help imagine, prototype, and ship new social experiences within the OpenAI ecosystem. This team operates with a strong product mindset, moving quickly from idea to experiment to iteration, and isn't afraid to rethink or rebuild when learning points in a new direction.

You'll work across the stack-building frontend and backend features, processing data, and collaborating closely with designers and product partners-to create social product surfaces that drive discovery, connection, and virality. This includes developing production systems on top of the high-scale internal platforms that power ChatGPT and the OpenAI API, and designing new systems when existing ones aren't sufficient.

We're looking for engineers who thrive in small, nimble teams, bring creative product ideas to the table, and pair strong execution with sharp judgment. You should be comfortable operating with ambiguity, learning from experiments, and using those insights to refine both product direction and technical implementation.

In this role, you will:

  • Prototype and iterate quickly on new social product features, exploring how AI can improve connection, creativity, and shared experiences.

  • Turn ideas into functional demos and ship code early and often, using real-world feedback to guide iteration.

  • Scale the strongest ideas from prototype to production using OpenAI's internal platforms and new systems when needed.

  • Work across the full stack to build social product features from early experiments through launch.

  • Collaborate closely with research, product, design, data science, and engineering partners to drive meaningful impact.

  • Learn from and contribute alongside deeply tenured engineers while fostering a high-trust, inclusive, and candid team culture.

You might thrive in this role if you:

  • Have 3+ years of professional software engineering experience

  • Have built and shipped full-stack apps end-to-end - from prototype to traction - in fast-moving, startup-like environments.

  • Are energized by ambiguity - you can take a one-sentence idea and turn it into a launched feature.

  • Jump at opportunities to learn new systems or languages and share your insights clearly with others.

  • Care deeply about creating social, interactive experiences that feel intuitive, authentic, and delightful to use.

  • Thrive in high-ambiguity environments and can independently translate broad ideas into shipped products.

  • Welcome direct, constructive feedback and offer the same to others with clarity and respect.

  • Are fluent across multiple programming languages and frameworks - choosing the right tools to get the job done efficiently.
