Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)
Job Summary The Manager of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is the Chief Administrative Officer (CAO). The CAO serves in an advisory capacity to the Chair's leadership team, the faculty and members of the department. The CAO is responsible for short and long-range planning to promote the goals of the Department and to maximize utilization of the available resources. The CAO contributes substantially to the strategic direction of its various programs in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Orofacial Pain, Hospital Dentistry and General Practice Residency, and Pain Research.
The CAO oversees all facets of the administration teams, including finance, research, human resources, and educational programs and assures compliance with University and other applicable policies and regulations; administers and oversees department compensation programs; represents the department's interests within the School of Dentistry and across the campus in a professional manner,
The CAO establishes and implements effective and efficient management systems to ensure that the University and Department goals are met and ensures effective collaboration between the clinic operational teams (reporting to the Clinic supervisor/manager) and the administrative teams (reporting to the CAO). The incumbent builds collaborative relationships with key personnel within the department, School and campus; creates a welcoming and inclusive environment where employees of the department are engaged and thrive, and performs other duties as assigned. The major functional responsibilities include financial planning, analysis and management of a substantially complex budget of $10 million, oversight of 70 academic and staff appointees, and oversight of two research labs. The department's unique position between the School of Dentistry, Medical Center and San Francisco General Hospital requires the manager to maintain a leadership presence and advocacy role across the multiple business units and across the campus. The School of Dentistry is in the process of partnering with UCSF Health. As part of this partnership the structure of the SOD and clinical activities and funds flow are in the process of being reworked. This position will collaborate with SOD partners during this transition process and assist with change management.
The CAO serves as a liaison between members of the Department, other departments, University offices and services, as well as individuals and organizations outside UCSF. The CAO also serves on department and university advisory committees. The final salary and offer components are subject to additional approvals based on UC policy. Your placement within the salary range is dependent on a number of factors including your work experience and internal equity within this position classification at UCSF. For positions that are represented by a labor union, placement within the salary range will be guided by the rules in the collective bargaining agreement. The salary range for this position is $143,900 - $215,800 (Annual Rate). Department Description The Department of Oral Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) teaches both theoretical and clinical courses in the predoctoral dental curriculum and offers instruction in medical emergencies in the dental hygiene and predoctoral dental programs. Basic research in the department includes investigations of the mechanisms of bone growth and replacement, the use of lasers and mechanisms of pain, and studies of treatment and outcomes of implant, orthognathic, TMJ, and reconstructive surgery.
The department provides clinical care in oral and maxillofacial surgery to ambulatory patients at the Dental Clinics Building, the OMFS Clinic at Moffitt Hospital, and the oral and maxillofacial surgery clinic at San Francisco General Hospital. Treatment for hospitalized patients is provided at Moffitt/Long Hospital, Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital, UCSF/Mount Zion, and Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The General Practice Residency Program serves Dental Oncology patients at Mission Bay, skilled nursing facility patients at Laguna Honda Hospital and Special Needs patients in the Dental Clinic and in the OR of Moffitt/Long Hospital. The department also provides Oral Surgery faculty for the Highland Hospital in Oakland and Benioff Children's Hospital of Oakland. The department provides elective courses in oral and maxillofacial surgery at San Francisco General Hospital and implant clerkships where students learn to assist with surgical procedures. The department's postgraduate residency program leads to certification in OMFS with an MD degree. A PhD is also offered to suitable applicants.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in related area and 7-10 years of progressively responsible management experience and/or equivalent education/experience.
- Proven skills to quickly evaluate complex issues and identify multiple options for resolution.
- Demonstrated management and conflict resolution skills to effectively lead and motivate others.
- Proven leadership ability and significant supervisory experience in managing a sizeable group of researchers, technical staff, administrative personnel, etc.
- Critical thinking paired with strong skills in team work and use of judgment in determining priorities.
- Ability to use tact and diplomacy in planning, problem solving and decision making.
- The ability to communicate effectively with a wide variety of personalities and constituent groups.
- Broad knowledge of the organization's processes, protocols and procedures with a focus on budget, account and fund management and / or personnel management under labor contract(s) and personnel policy.
- Broad knowledge of financial analysis and reporting techniques; human resources and risk management planning; and / or accounting and payroll.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to influence / persuade all levels of staff.
- Skills in organization and customer service to effectively manage multiple important priorities. Proven ability to organize department work functions in an efficient and effective manner.
- Broad knowledge of common organization-specific and other computer application programs.
- Skills to work collaboratively with other locations.
Preferred Qualifications
- Graduate degree in business or public administration, finance, organizational development,educational administration, or related field.
- Knowledge of UC policies, procedures and education systems.
