At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

As the New Glenn Materials & Processes (M&P) Senior Manager for mechanical systems, you'll be responsible for leading a team of materials and processes engineers as they perform tasks related to the design, manufacture, and operation of the New Glenn launch system's 7-Engine and 9-Engine booster programs.

You will be responsible for championing efforts to identify, develop, and deploy methods to improve quality, reduce cost, and optimize build sequence and schedules. We are looking for someone to apply their technical expertise, leadership skills, and commitment to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Provide technical and personnel leadership to an M&P team focused on the design and qualification of mechanical systems hardware.

  • Manage roles, responsibilities, and accountability for each direct report. Work closely with every team member to meet M&P requirements for the program while working seamlessly with design, analysis, manufacturing, and supply chain teams in a deliberate effort to develop workable solutions that can meet acceptable levels of performance while meeting aggressive schedule targets.

  • Support the disposition of non-conformances as quickly as possible while including all relevant disciplines to ensure the correct decision is made with regard to specific hardware.

  • Ensure timely review of drawings, work instructions, and related technical processes in support of systems design, fabrication, processing, integration, and full-scale qualification testing.

  • Support flow-down of company-wide processes and command media to ensure proper compliance. Contribute to revisions of such media on an as-needed basis.

  • Define and write material test plans for design value generation, execute sourcing of testing, and evaluate test data to develop statistics-based design values.

  • Provide coaching and career guidance for direct reports to improve performance and technical excellence.

  • Travel to suppliers and Blue sites is required.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in materials science, mechanical engineering, or a related field.

  • 10+ years of experience in an M&P role focused on metallic components and assemblies, with signature authority for drawing reviews.

  • Previous experience managing personnel, including talent acquisition and termination, coaching functions and performance management.

  • Experience developing and executing plans for material characterization, such as microstructural analysis, mechanical testing, and environmental testing (e.g., elevated or cryogenic temperature testing, corrosion testing).

  • Demonstrated ability to operate, make decisions, lead, and make forward progress in ambiguous environments.

  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle small and large projects with a variety of internal and external customers.

  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion.

  • Demonstrated writing skills through academic research and/or writing of specifications, testing reports, memos, etc.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • In-depth experience in Materials & Processes of complex hardware (i.e., castings, forgings, additively manufactured components, welding, machining, cleaning, non-destructive testing methods, complex assembly, and acceptance testing).

  • In-depth understanding of the metallurgical properties of aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, stainless steels, and/or nickel superalloys.

  • Previous engineering leadership/management experience in an aerospace environment with space hardware, aircraft, or similar mission-critical, high-value components.

  • Previous experience and success in developing new materials or processes.
