Job Description

Packard Medical Group Inc. (PMG) contracts with Packard Children's Health Alliance (PCHA) to provide professional medical, research and/or administrative services at clinics operated by PCHA. PCHA is the preeminent medical foundation that owns and operates multi-specialty medical outpatient clinics, to support, benefit and further the charitable, scientific and educational purposes of Lucile Salter Packard Children's Hospital at Stanford (LPCH). PCHA and LPCH are known in the marketplace as Stanford Medicine Children's Health (SMCH). The primary care and specialist practices that make up PCHA represent more than 200 physicians and mid-level practitioners across 15 specialties employed by PMG, with practices located in Northern California. This role may have interactions and collaboration opportunities with Stanford School of Medicine.

The Associate Medical Director (AMD) for Pediatric Specialty Care serves as a pivotal medical leader within PMG and PCHA. The AMD of Specialty Care Services will provide medical leadership and oversee administrative activities for the clinical services offered by Packard Medical Group physicians as the LPCH Medical Foundation. This role is essential in maintaining high standards of medical and patient care, enhancing the reputation of the ambulatory clinic sites, and optimizing the use of clinic facilities and resources. This role reports to the Medical Director of PCHA and partners with the PCHA Associate Medical Director for Primary Care, executive leaders, directors, managers, providers, other clinicians, and administrative staff to provide high quality specialty care and service offered. They will ensure that physician perspectives are integrated into clinic operations, including goal setting, budget decisions, strategic initiatives, workflow standardization, space allocation, issue resolution, compliance, and effective communication with clinical services.

The AMD for Pediatric Specialty Care will lead the development of the network's specialty care physician offices and clinics associated with SMCH and its care delivery system consistent with the vision, values, mission and strategic priorities of PCHA and SMCH. Other key focus areas include standardization of processes, ensuring high-quality patient experiences, optimization of medical and technical resources, financial stewardship, regulatory compliance, and ensuring seamless continuity of care.

The essential functions and key responsibilities of this role include:

Strategic Leadership:Collaborate with the PCHA Medical Director and administrative leaders to advance an integrated care system. Advocate for the delivery of specialty health care services that exemplify quality and service excellence across the enterprise. Assist in developing successful specialty care practices through physician and advanced practice provider recruitment. Work with the PCHA Medical Director, executive leaders and practice administrators / directors / managers to define and achieve operational goals. Facilitate and lead clinical/administrative meetings as assigned and participate in relevant committees.

Quality and Safety:Promote a standardized clinical approach focused on superior outcomes, clinical effectiveness, and continuous improvement. Collaborate on the design and development of quality improvement measures and provider engagement in system quality goals. Oversee coding audits and educational activities to ensure compliance with medical documentation and physician billing standards. Ensure PCHA provider participation in formal quality improvement initiatives and committee involvement. Protect patient confidentiality in collaboration with administrative partners, adhering to federal health care regulations and other regulatory requirements.

Patient Experience: Patient experience is a top priority for the organization with current performance at high levels. The system aspires to move beyond traditional survey tools to broaden impact. Understanding the patient/caregiver experience, adopting new digital tools to enhance those experiences, and optimizing access to care services are critical tenets of the plan. The massive shift to virtual care provides new opportunities to further innovate care delivery for patients and communities. The AMD for Specialty Care will work with the Medical Director, the AMD for Primary Care, executive leaders and practice administrators / directors / managers to ensure superlative patient/family experience.

People/Wellness:In partnership with PCHA Physician Leads, ensure supervision of specialty care physicians and advanced practice providers (APPs). Establish and communicate clinical and service excellence standards for PCHA specialty medical providers and address any performance issues in coordination with the PCHA Medical Director and PMG Physicians Leads as appropriate. Contribute to the evaluation of other clinic staff performance within the organization as appropriate and requested. Support education and training initiatives for specialty care physicians and APPs. Foster a collaborative environment with other departments, medical staff, and the broader SMCH/PCHA Ambulatory Ecosystem.

Network Optimization:SMCH network spans over several counties in Northern California. The diversity of the network is a strength for strategic growth and the capability to provide the right care for the right patient in the right setting. This position plays a key role in development and expansion of specialty care strategies across the system, advancing relationships between and among stakeholders and executing PCHA's network strategy.

Regulatory Compliance:Maintains personal knowledge of and assures compliance with federal and state health care program regulations, Joint Commission requirements, professional licensure standards/regulations, and other regulatory and/or accrediting requirements for clinic sites. Ensures medical documentation and other reports of patients are completed in a timely fashion to meet with federal, state, accreditation, PCHA/SMCH, and Medical Staff requirements.

Financial Strength:Given the dynamic healthcare landscape, including payment reform and health policy changes, the need to focus on costs, utilization and stewardship of resources is critical to medical success. The AMD for Specialty Care will encourage established as well as innovative cost-effective care practices while maintaining high quality of care. Assists in developing and implementing financial strategies to improve the operational efficiency of specialty care services. Participate in formulating a strategic marketing plan and organizational budget to ensure their successful execution.

The AMD for Pediatric Specialty Care reports to the PCHA Medical Director. The AMD serves as a dyad partner to PCHA senior executive leaders.

Qualifications

CANDIDATE PROFILE: The ideal candidate will be an outstanding and respected specialty or primary care pediatrician who possesses a deep understanding of the complexities of academic and community medicine, including how to leverage the strengths of an integrated care model. The successful candidate will have experience building fellowship, trust and have the skills to effectively engage teams and diverse stakeholder groups across the Stanford Medicine enterprise. The physician leader, with a proven track record of building teams that achieve desired outcomes.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • An qualified candidate will be a Board-Certified pediatrician(MD/DO) with a deep passion for, commitment to, and track record of accomplishment in clinical care delivery.
  • Must be eligible and maintain appropriate hospital privileges.
  • 3 to 5 years of administrative and leadership experience, having served as a senior clinical leader. A senior clinical leader with community and/or academic experience is required. An outstanding leader who inspires, builds, motivates and holds teams and physicians accountable is a must; a demonstrated ability to identify and recruit high-performing and diverse teams.
  • Collaborative relationship-building skills in a matrixed environment, with an ability to successfully partner and build consensus with key internal and external stakeholders.
  • A dedicated clinician with an outstanding reputation for clinical excellence with an active clinical practice.
  • Experience building clinical programs, in alignment with organizational priorities and patient needs.
  • Excellent listening and communication skills.
  • Financial acumen and deep understanding of payment methodology, physician incentives and cost control techniques.
  • Proven commitment to create and maintain a culture of inclusion, diversity, and professional fulfillment.
  • Experience developing and implementing value-based care and population health strategies preferred.
  • Candidate must meet requirements for licensure in the state of California.
