Job Summary:

The certified Lactation Consultant RN (RN, IBCLC) is an expert in the management of the breast-feeding mother-baby dyad. The Lactation Consultant RN works collaboratively with the Birthing Center, Neonatal Intensive Care nursery, Pediatrics, OB, Family Practice, and nursing care teams to develop feeding plans for a range of infants from the normal newborn to the complex neonate. They make clinical assessments, and use current lactation theories and research to develop evidence- based feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting plan of care and the family's breastfeeding goals.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:



  • Provide lactation support and services to breastfeeding mother/infant dyads. Collaborate with assigned team to develop feeding plans.
  • Use current evidence to develop feeding plans that address individual feeding issues while respecting the family's breastfeeding goals.
  • Assess adequacy of breastfeeding and provides interventions and patient education as necessary for correction and/or prevention of feeding problems. Assess lactation needs by obtaining medical histories, examining patients, and gathering information about the infant-mother dyad. Assess and document physical, psychological, and social factors in developing an individualized plan of care.
  • Identifies expected patient outcomes. Seeks guidance as needed in revision of plan of care. Participates in discussion with members of the interdisciplinary team in evaluation of patient care. Communicates relevant information to interdisciplinary team to promote continuity of care.
  • Assists mothers of infants who cannot breastfeed to establish and maintain a milk supply and store their milk appropriately.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team and outpatient IBCLC to provide continuity of care upon discharge or transfer of patients.
  • Provide breastfeeding education and materials to patients as needed. Assess patient readiness to learn and delivers patient education as appropriate for patient. Participate in developing, implementing and evaluating patient education resources and programs.
  • Teach, coach, support and mentor nursing staff and other healthcare learners to promote evidence-based clinical practice and support breastfeeding skills. Enhance the body of knowledge in nursing, lactation, and breastfeeding through exchange of ideas and knowledge using methods such as posters, newsletters, presentations, and publications.
  • Maintain certification as lactation consultant. RN Lactation Consultants must have a minimum of 25 continuing education hours/year.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.



Job Eligibility Requirements:



  • Work requires graduation from an accredited BSN program.
  • Two years of RN experience is required.
  • IBCLC Certification by IBLCE (International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners) is required.
  • Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required.



Job Schedule:

The schedule for this position is day shifts, Monday-Friday, with no weekends or holidays.
