Working under the general supervision of the Principal Investigator and Instructor, and in accordance with established hospital policies and procedures, conducts a variety of experiments where methodologies are clearly established. Calculates, transcribes, and analyzes data using basic bioinformatic approaches. Studies the literature, attends seminars, and expands their knowledge of epigenetics to best function as part of our research team.
The Kuroda laboratory, a lab within BWH, Harvard Medical School, and the Mass General Brigham, is searching for motivated individuals to fill a Research Assistant position. Our laboratory utilizes genetic, genomic, and proteomic approaches to elucidate mechanisms that drive gene regulation, especially at the level of chromatin composition and function. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who is interested in working in an academic basic research setting on projects with relevance to normal and aberrant gene expression.

PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As a Research Lab Tech I, you will be part of a research team, and your responsibilities will include executing genomic and molecular biological experiments and utilizing your bioinformatic training to analyze chromatin factor binding patterns, protein-protein interactions, and genotype-specific transcriptional outputs.

1. Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine tests following established methodologies. Routine procedures may include DNA cloning, evaluation of protein expression levels, or construction of libraries for high throughput DNA sequencing.

2. Central to this position will be the bioinformatic analysis of sequencing datasets resulting from ChIP-seq and RNA-seq analyses of model organisms or cells in culture.

3. Records and stores data, summarizes, and analyzes results using basic statistics.

4. Prepares laboratory reagents, chemicals, instruments, and equipment.

5. Maintains supplies inventory in accordance with departmental procedures.

6. Discusses progress of work regularly with supervisor.

7. All other duties, as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

* B.S. in a biological or chemical science with a strong emphasis on bioinformatics.

* New graduate with relevant course or project work.

* Some experience with model organism genetics and/or molecular techniques is preferred.

SKILLS/ ABILITIES/ COMPETENCIES REQUIRED:

* Good organizational skills, detail-oriented.

* Sound degree of computer literacy.

* Ability to methodically record data and to analyze data using basic statistics.

* Ability to perform a variety of routine tests and prioritize work.

* Good interpersonal and communication skills.

* Ability to demonstrate professionalism.

Additional skills:

* Ability to multitask, troubleshoot, and establish daily priorities

* Passion for science

None

WORKING CONDITIONS:

This position takes place in a laboratory setting, which includes handling of some hazardous chemicals using appropriate safety precautions. Some lifting and bending are required for re-stocking lab supplies.
