The Centers for Educational Equity and Excellence ensure non-traditional students excel at the top public University in the world. By respecting every undergraduate as a unique individual, CE3 programs empower UC Berkeley students to achieve and lead.

The Educational Opportunity Program (EOP) is one of several CE3 programs, and it provides holistic support designed to address the needs of communities of systemically marginalized identities including first-generation & low-income college students with the guidance and resources necessary to succeed at UC Berkeley, one of the best public universities in the world. EOP academic counselors and student staff work alongside amazing students who, despite their unique responsibilities and challenges, transform their lives through academic achievement and personal growth. EOP's individualized academic counseling, comprehensive support services, and extensive campus referral network help students develop the unique gifts and talents they each bring to the university while empowering them to achieve.

Position Summary

Involves providing individualized services to students who are systemically marginalized, low income, first generation college students, and / or otherwise at a higher risk of experiencing academic difficulty, to help students succeed. Services may include academic needs assessment, developing individual study plans, recognizing and addressing academic and non-academic barriers to academic success, and counseling on other aspects that may affect student retention and academic success. Includes specializations in particular groups, particular academic skills (e.g., research skills, preparation for graduate programs), or success in particular academic programs.

Additionally, this role will provide direct support and oversight in managing EOP's student-facing community spaces and intake program operations.

Responsibilities

Holistic Counseling:

  • Provides comprehensive multicultural holistic counseling across disciplines and colleges/schools to systemically marginalized populations (e.g., low-income, first-generation college, populations, etc.).
  • Conducts comprehensive analyses of students' issues and needs and develops a plan of action to enhance students' academic success.
  • This includes assisting students in understanding and navigating university policies, providing financial aid counseling and academic crisis intervention, triaging students to appropriate resources, and documenting all service contacts and interventions using the Berkeley Online Advising (BOA) platform.
  • The position requires maintaining up-to-date and timely documentation of all student meetings and programmatic contact.

Leadership and Student Staff Supervision:

  • Hires, trains, and supervises paraprofessionals - specifically, EOP intake student staff and interns.
  • Assists students in developing problem-solving and self-management skills as a part of their professional development.
  • Facilitates small group discussion sessions with student staff and interns.

Intake/Front Office/Program Operations:

  • Participates in the development, administration, and revision of standard operating procedures, protocols, and guidelines.
  • Manages the oversight of EOP student facing locations.
  • Conducts trends analyses and data collection based on intake student interactions, services and space usage.
  • Develops resulting recommendations to promote the efficiency of EOP student facing locations.
  • Functions as a resource on issues including, but not limited to: escalated customer service problems, inventory/storage needs, and managing office/technical equipment.
  • Supports in the implementation of services in the EOP student locations by other EOP student staff, such as Peer Academic Counselors, EOP STEM coordinators, etc.

Event planning and project/program management:

  • Provides assistance with the planning and delivery of EOP events including, but are not limited to: EOP New Student Welcome, EOP Frosh Yield Reception, First Gen Celebration, Workshops, etc.
  • Support with occasional weekend and evening events.

Trainings, Meetings & Campus Collaborations:

  • Participate in professional development opportunities that enhance individual and collective work towards supporting students and addressing inequities that non-traditional communities experience.
  • Keeps abreast of student trends in higher education, particularly low-income and first-generation college populations, and professional development.
  • Keeps abreast of campus policies and student trends by attending ongoing meetings with campus stakeholders.

Required Qualifications

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the theories and practices of multicultural counseling, learning, and human and career development.
  • Knowledge in how to enhance students' intellectual and personal growth and development, including critical thinking, effective communication, self-appraisal, self-esteem, clarification of values, appropriate career choices, and leadership.
  • Knowledge of the methodologies used to enhance student achievement, such as, strategies for effective counseling and peer mentoring, small group facilitation and training, coaching, mentoring, and advocacy.
  • Knowledge of trends and issues facing low-income and first-generation college students who are, systemically impacted, and navigating inequities in higher education.
  • Knowledge and experience in analyzing complex situations and identifying solutions for problem-solving; skills and experience in developing and administering programs designed to meet the diverse needs of students.
  • Experience in developing, coordinating, and delivering programming/workshops/events to enhance student experience and achievement.
  • Knowledge of and experience in conflict management and intervention strategies.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local requirements to provide for access, health, confidentiality, and safety; legal and ethical issues governing the delivery of counseling services.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, both verbally and in writing.
  • Strong multicultural humility and ability to work with stakeholders from variety of backgrounds and identities.
  • Experience working with various communities of systemically marginalized students, including first generation and low-income college students.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge and experience in researching, compiling and analyzing data, and generating reports.
  • Master's degree in education, counseling, psychology, and/or equivalent experience/training.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted annual salary range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $78,000.00 - $85,000.00.

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is an exempt monthly-paid position.
