About us

National Grid's New England business unit owns and operates electricity transmission networks in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, and Vermont, and owns and operates electricity and gas distribution networks in Massachusetts. The New England business delivers electricity to over 1.3 million customers.

We are looking for a Vice President to lead engineering within the NE Electric business, to be responsible for all electric asset management and systems engineering within the New England jurisdiction, reporting to the Chief Operating Officer of the NE Electric business.

Job purpose

The person in post will develop comprehensive electric asset and system engineering policies and strategies, including contributing to the investment and maintenance plan to ensure the safety, reliability, and growth of the network. This position also provides executive leadership to ensure the business leads the way in the de-carbonization of the electricity grid, introducing new tools, equipment, and ways of working into the business.

The role will have five direct reports, and will lead a wider engineering team of around 300 employees. There will also be significant interaction with high-level senior leaders, including with group executives in the UK and the US.

Key accountabilities
  • Defining and implementing the engineering and asset management frameworks, policies, procedures, and controls necessary to drive an efficient and effective approach to project development and design that optimizes the delivery of engineering design and management of assets
  • Accountable for optimizing assets over the whole lifecycle through the delivery of all policies, procedures, and work plans, including developing asset replacement strategies, engineering standards, safety compliance procedures, and work plan recommendations
  • Responsible for project and engineering design and implementation with innovative engineering solutions for safe and efficient field operations
  • Maintaining and evolving asset policies to ensure electric engineering standards achieve compliance and safety goals
  • Leading by example in driving change, creating context for others; clearly communicating the business reasons for change at all levels of the organization
  • Inspiring and delivering new ways of working collaboratively within the business, driving efficiency and performance excellence
Candidate requirements
  • A bachelor's degree in an engineering discipline is required; a Professional Engineer license would be preferred
  • Extensive engineering, asset management, and change management experience in the utilities industry
  • A track record of developing and deploying strategy and policy in a complex business area, within a regulated environment
  • Senior leadership experience, developing high-performing teams
  • A dynamic leader who can challenge the team to think at a different pace, gaining trust and buy-in when driving change
  • Proven customer interaction, working with high-level customers on strategic projects with significant investment responsibility

Salary: circa $260k to $340k.
Candidates will be assessed and provided offers against the minimum qualifications of this role and their individual experience.

Location: the role will be based in Waltham, MA. Typically, the person will be required to be on-site here for 2-3 days per week, with most of the remaining time out at other sites, developing relationships and building trust with the team. There will also be possible travel across the US for benchmarking, and to the UK for work with peers.
