At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role supports the development and operations of New Glenn, a single-configuration, heavy-lift orbital launch vehicle capable of routinely carrying people and payloads to low-Earth orbit, geostationary transfer orbit, cislunar, and beyond. Its first stage is fully reusable, and the vehicle was designed from the beginning to be human-capable.

We are a team of innovators committed to revolutionizing access to space through accelerated development cycles. As a Product Development Engineer, you will drive rapid prototyping, sub-scale testing, and qualification of critical sub-systems for our heavy launch vehicles. This position is central to our iterative development approach, where you'll quickly transform concepts into testable hardware, gather performance data, and evolve designs toward flight readiness.

Your work will directly impact our ability to compress development timelines and increase testing frequency, ultimately accelerating our path to orbit.

Responsibilities
  • Rapid Prototyping: Design and build quick-turn prototype hardware to validate concepts and performance characteristics for rocket sub-systems

  • Sub-Scale Testing: Develop and execute sub-scale test programs that validate design concepts before full-scale implementation

  • Process Development: Create and standardize processes for repeatable testing, data collection, and qualification of new technologies

  • Design Evolution: Translate test results into design improvements through multiple rapid development iterations

  • Cross-Functional Integration: Work at the intersection of design, manufacturing, and test to optimize hardware development cycles

  • Technical Documentation: Develop manufacturing plans that define component flow through fabrication, assembly, testing, and qualification

  • Supplier Collaboration: Work with external partners to accelerate prototype fabrication and specialized testing capabilities

Qualifications
  • BS degree or higher in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or related technical field

  • 3-6 years of experience in prototype development, preferably for aerospace systems

  • Demonstrated ability to rapidly iterate designs based on test data and performance requirements

  • Experience designing and executing sub-scale or component-level test programs

  • Practical knowledge of manufacturing processes with ability to provide design-for-manufacturability input

  • Hands-on experience transitioning designs from prototype to qualification units

  • Understanding of materials selection, joining techniques, and manufacturing constraints

  • Proficiency with 3D CAD software and basic structural analysis tools

Highly Desired
  • Experience with aerospace propulsion, structures, or fluid systems

  • Background in design of experiments (DOE) and statistical analysis of test data

  • Knowledge of qualification pathways for aerospace hardware

  • Experience with prototype fabrication techniques including additive manufacturing

  • Familiarity with instrumentation, data acquisition, and test control systems

  • History of bringing innovative solutions to challenging technical problems

Additional Requirements
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with changing priorities

  • Willingness to be hands-on with hardware during fabrication and testing phases

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to document processes and present findings

Questions to Consider Before Applying

How have you used rapid prototyping techniques to accelerate a development program? What experience do you have designing and executing sub-scale tests that informed full-scale system design? How have you balanced speed of development with technical rigor during qualification activities?
