Given this context, the faculty in the Department of History, Politics, and Social Justice invites applications for an assistant professor nine-month tenure-track of Political Science in the College of Arts, Sciences, and Education with a start date of August 2026. Job responsibilities include teaching undergraduate courses, serving as a faculty advisor, mentoring and coaching students inside and outside the classroom;
coordinator of the Political Science major; and producing scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline; facilitating presentations at well-respected professional conferences; engaging in the procurement of extramural funds with interdisciplinary teams; participating/attending in departmental meetings, College, and university service as well as engaging in service to one's professional discipline and the larger Winston-Salem and Forsyth County community. |

The department seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Political Science in the College of Arts, Sciences, Business and Education with a start date of August 2026. Duties include teaching undergraduate courses (American Government, African-American politics, comparative politics, Introduction to Political Science, pre-law courses, research methods) advising,
coordinator of the Political Science major and mentoring students; scholarly research which results in publication and presentation at professional conferences. Participation in departmental, community, and university service.
We seek exceptional candidates with a strong commitment to undergraduate teaching excellence and mentoring undergraduate research, interdisciplinary teaching and research collaborations, as well as engagement with and service to the broader public. We welcome candidates with a background in American Institutions, Comparative Politics, Law, and Research Methods. We are most interested in candidates with an interest in working collaboratively to enhance the strengths of both our Political Science curricular and co-curricular programs. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in Political Science, research experience, and the potential for attracting extramural funding. Candidates must also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and a commitment to a liberal arts education in a diverse educational community that serves a significant number of first-generation college students. |

Candidates must possess the following requirements for consideration:
- Applicants must have a doctoral degree in Political Science or a closely related field from a regionally accredited college/university, postdoctoral or equivalent research experience, and the potential for attracting extramural funding
- Candidates must have at least two years of teaching and/or industry training experience in political science topics in any of the following formats: teaching courses, training sessions, conducting professional development workshops, and/or other continuing education seminars
- Candidates must possess effective written and verbal communication skills, and they must illustrate effective interpersonal skills
- Candidates must demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively across our undergraduate degree programs in Political Science, History, and Justice Studies with colleagues to develop and expand cross-disciplinary course offerings and enhance co-curricular programs

Teaching and Advising
- The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses in Political Science and cross-disciplinary courses either face-to-face or online and must communicate continuously with students as s/he monitors student progress for student success
- The successful candidate must construct sufficiently detailed course syllabi prior to the first class
- The successful candidate will teach each class section, create and present relevant course activities, assess assignments by providing written feedback in a timely fashion, and evaluate student performance
- The successful candidate must hold office hours each week
Scholarship, Research, and Creative Activity
- The ideal candidate must produce scholarly research that results in publications in peer-reviewed journals within the discipline area or within peer-reviewed journals that promote the teaching and learning of the discipline
- The idea candidate must facilitate presentations at well-respected international, national, regional, state, and local professional meetings and conferences within the academic discipline area
- The ideal candidate will cooperate with faculty across the university and external to the institution as well as with professionals across the nation to form interdisciplinary teams that procure sponsored research
University, Professional, and Community Service and Engagement
- The successful candidate must attend consistently departmental and College meetings
- The successful candidate will serve on departmental, College, and University-level committees.
- Maintain membership in discipline-specific professional organizations
- Assist discipline-specific professional organizations with reviews of conference proposals, peer-reviewed journal articles, and other professional engagement opportunities
- Serve on community-oriented committees, boards, and commissions related to justice studies
