Position Summary
Join the Ramily! The Department of Housing and Residence Life at Winston-Salem State University is accepting applications for the Assistant Director for Living-Learning Communities.
The Assistant Director for Living-Learning Communities will provide dedicated leadership, coordination, and assessment for WSSU's Living-Learning Communities. This role ensures that academic and residential experiences are intentionally aligned to support student success, engagement, and retention. The Assistant Director for Living-Learning Communities collaborates with faculty and campus partners, supports Resident Advisors assigned to LLCs, manages communication and promotion of LLC programs, and oversees data-driven assessment to evaluate program effectiveness and outcomes.
Responsibilities of the Assistant Director for Living-Learning Communities include:
Development and Implementation of LLCs:

  • Assist in the creation, development, and implementation of living-learning communities in alignment with the university's academic and student engagement goals.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff, and campus partners to ensure LLC programs enhance student learning and success.
  • Community Partner Collaboration:
  • Establish and maintain strong collaborative relationships with LLC partners, including academic departments, student services, and external organizations, to support the mission of each living-learning community.
  • Assist in recruiting and engaging stakeholders involved in LLCs, providing ongoing support to ensure the program's success.
  • Promotion and Communication:
  • Assist in promoting LLC opportunities during admissions, new student orientation, and other events, effectively communicating the goals and services of the LLC program.
  • Provide information and guidance to incoming students and families to help them meet deadlines, understand expectations, and prepare for their first year.
  • Make oral presentations to promote LLCs and their benefits to prospective students and campus partners including Executive Leadership, Board of trustees, and Academic Affairs Department.
  • Resident Assistant (RA) Training and Support:
  • Provide specialized training for Resident Advisors (RAs) to help them understand the goals of the LLCs and their critical role in fostering in-hall engagement in alignment with the LLC focus areas.
  • Support RAs in developing programming and activities that align with the LLC objectives and foster a strong sense of community among students.
  • Program Coordination and Assessment:
  • Coordinate and assess living-learning community programs and services using evidence-based approaches that enhance student success, with a focus on developing a sense of belonging and academic achievement.
  • Develop and implement program assessment tools to measure LLC effectiveness, engagement levels, and student outcomes, in conjunction with standard university assessment requirements.
  • Reporting and Documentation:
  • Provide comprehensive annual reports on LLC activities, outcomes, and assessments, offering insights and recommendations for continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of programs, partnerships, and student engagement within LLCs.

Some evenings and weekends as needed.
Department Required Skills

  • Master's Degree in Higher Education, Student Affairs, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Three to five years of experience in student affairs or housing and residence life
  • Experience working with Living-Learning Communities, residential curriculums, or other high-impact academic engagement initiatives
  • Experience designing or facilitating learning-focused residential or co-curricular programs; strong skills in program coordination, student engagement, and community-building
  • Demonstrated ability to train, guide, and support student staff, especially Resident Advisors
  • Training or experience in program assessment, data interpretation, and using assessment results to inform practice
  • Familiarity with systems such as StarRez, Banner, EAB Navigate, or similar platforms

Preferred Years Experience, Skills, Training, Education

  • Ability to build and maintain collaborative partnerships with faculty, staff, and campus stakeholders
  • Effective communication skills, including written, verbal, and presentation abilities
  • Strong organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines
  • Knowledge of residential life operations, student success strategies, and high-impact educational practices
  • Skill in promoting programs to students, families, and partners through multiple communication channels
