Position Summary:
Medscape is looking for an Oncology Editor to assign, edit, and oversee high-impact medical news coverage related to oncology, ensuring accuracy, clarity, and clinical relevance for a physician audience. In addition to daily news editing, the role includes reporting and writing deep-dive features and analysis pieces.
This editor will work closely with the oncology team and report to the Executive Editor. The ideal candidate has a strong command of oncology, excellent news judgment, superior editing and feature-writing skills, and meticulous attention to detail. They must thrive under tight deadlines and collaborate with a large, fast-moving virtual newsroom.
This role plays a key part in Medscape's AI-driven editorial evolution. The Oncology Editor will use and help refine AI-assisted tools for news discovery, content generation support, and workflow efficiency. This includes evaluating AI-suggested news leads, editing AI-supported text for clinical accuracy and editorial voice, and partnering with the product and editorial teams to improve AI models and outputs. The editor will help shape best practices for responsible AI use in medical journalism, ensuring that all AI-assisted content meets Medscape's high standards for credibility, sourcing, and physician trust.
Responsibilities:
  • Assign and edit oncology articles, largely news, that appeal to a well-versed audience of oncologists and related specialties
  • Pitch and write features with new, fresh, and creative angles, working closely with the Executive Editor
  • Work with our marketing teams to create interesting newsletters and promotional content
  • Work with our operations teams to get content published promptly
  • Partner closely with the Executive Editor on shaping oncology coverage that integrates responsible AI use while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
  • Evaluate, refine, and elevate AI-suggested headlines, summaries, and draft text to ensure accuracy, nuance, and alignment with Medscape's editorial voice.
  • Provide structured feedback to AI and product teams to continuously improve the accuracy, relevance, and usability of editorial AI tools.
Requirements:
  • Bachelor's degree in English, biology, journalism, or other relevant area
  • 5+ years in health content editing and writing
  • Extensive knowledge of the oncology field
  • Experience assigning clearly-defined story ideas to freelancers
  • Ability to edit stories for accuracy, balance, timeliness, and relevance
  • Ability to write deep or investigative stories
  • High reliability and ability to take direction and run with it
  • Flexibility and creativity to meet the needs of a growing multimedia news team in a competitive environment.
  • Detail-oriented and deadline-focused with solid proofreading skills
  • Ability to clearly and succinctly translate medical jargon and academic speak to a lay audience
  • Ability to edit for accuracy, balance, timeliness, and relevance, particularly when reviewing AI-generated or AI-assisted content requiring human clinical judgment.
  • Flexibility and creativity to meet the needs of a growing multimedia newsroom and to adopt emerging AI tools that support new formats, efficiencies, and content types.
Salary Range: $80,000 - $88,000
